Oh, yeah. Back in Hilo, Hawaii; I'd go to the stands out by the beach or Wal-Mart to buy limes. Yum, I love me some limes. I could get 3 for $1. If they had really nice and green limes, I'd usually buy about $2 or $3 worth with a $5 and leave them the rest in their tip jar.

We will be having our first this year here in Ridgefield CT. I expect the event to get bigger and more important as time goes on. It's that less energy more healthy locally grown food thing. I just wish more would take interest in gardening around the house where I live.

Thumbs up Yep.

I love going to Pepper Place Market here in B'ham. A local bakery sells a few baked goods, and they are fantastic. The fruits and vegetables are excellent, people sell a lot of other things too like honey and soap, and people bring their dogs. That's my favorite part. They have a website. http://pepperplacemarket.com/ It's great. The only thing that sucks about it is you have to get up early to get the good stuff.

Sustainable organic and conventional farming is the only way to feed the world without destroying it at the same time, something Mosanto, Dow, BASF, etc., just can't seem to learn because they're only concerned about their bottom lines.

No long term tests of GMO's show them to be safe, the only tests Monsanto et al run are 28 day tests. You can see an assesment of many available tests here - http://www.enveurope.com/content/23/1/10

Quote:
Conclusion
Transcriptomics, proteomics and other related methods are not ready yet for routine use in the laboratories, and moreover they may be inappropriate for studying toxicity in animals, and could not in any way replace in vivo studies with all the physiological and biochemical parameters that are measured with organs weight, appearance, and histology. By contrast, afterwards, new approaches could well help to explain pathological results or action mechanisms of pesticides present in the GM plants or GM-fed animals, if found.

To obtain the transparency of raw data (including rat blood analyses) for toxicological tests, maintained illegally confidential, is crucial. It has also become crucial to apply objective criteria of interpretation like the criteria described here: sex-specific side effects or non-linear ones. Such data can be put online on the EFSA website with a view to provide a fuller review to the wider scientific community, and in order to better inform the citizen to make biotechnologies more socially acceptable. Since fundamental research is published on a regular basis, it should be the same for this kind of applied research on long-term health effects, as suggested by the CE/2001/18 and the corresponding 1829/2003 regulations.

We can conclude, from the regulatory tests performed today, that it is unacceptable to submit 500 million Europeans and several billions of consumers worldwide to the new pesticide GM-derived foods or feed, this being done without more controls (if any) than the only 3-month-long toxicological tests and using only one mammalian species, especially since there is growing evidence of concern (Tables 1 and 2). This is why we propose to improve the protocol of the 90-day studies to 2-year studies with mature rats, using the Toxotest approach, which should be rendered obligatory, and including sexual hormones assessment too. The reproductive, developmental, and transgenerational studies should also be performed. The new SSC statistical method of analysis is proposed in addition. This should not be optional if the plant is designed to contain a pesticide (as it is the case for more than 99% of cultivated commercialized GMOs), whilst for others, depending on the inserted trait, a case-by-case approach in the method to study toxicity will be necessary.
Support your local farmers markets and especially the farmers that are bringing in local produce. You can use the internet to see what products are in season locally.

Also look into CSA's, you pay up front for @ 20~25 weeks of veggies, herbs, etc., from a local pesticide-free farm and collect fresh every week. Fantastic stuff.

The Amish will be providing you with drug-free meats, just like the Menonites do here where I am. It's a little more expensive, but far better for you when you know your beef wasn't eating Monsanto's GMO corn all the time.

LOL the local farmers markets in Socal are dominated by people just buying from the same suppliers that supply the chain grocery stores and reselling them as "Oraganic"

All bullshit.

I know that does happen Mike, and it does suck. What I do like at our local Farmers Market is that many are family owned and run, and the whole family involved-grandparents all the way down to kids.

They are working on a registration and tracking system here so you can know for sure if it's an organic farm or not.

It sucks though because people trust these places to provide produce from real sources.

I do not go to the "farmers markets" here in NYC. I understand they are just trying to make a buck but $5 for a tiny little basket of strawberries? Yea, I can get the same strawberries at my local grocer for $2. (Strawberries is just an example. They sell other rip-off items as well.)

I know what you're thinkinging: "But they sell organic strawberries/fruits/vegetables!" Well, I would love to support them but paying almost triple for the same fruit except the ones I buy are not "organic" but still taste the same? That's absurd.

I bought strawberries, raspberries, and blueberries from an organic grocer once. Ain't happening again.

As a famous man once said: Fool me once... shame on... ... shame on you. You fool me... you can't get fooled again.

There's a world of difference (taste being one thing) between strawberries grown/picked on a local farm, and those bought in the supermarket.

A lot of the ones here in the city are all wannabe farmers. They're just a bunch of hippies trying to be trendy.

There is one in Union Square called Greenmarket. They are okay but the prices they charge are ridiculous even for "Manhattan prices."

When I was in Maine I went to this one place with my friends that was so good. And you're definitely right about them tasting different. I really liked the stuff we had there. They were pre-washed so we just bought them and ate them right there along with the merchant. They would give us samples and stuff and then when we were like "No bag necessary, ma'am. We're gonna eat it right here..." they would laugh and eat with us. They even cooked some of the foods for us. Technically they weren't supposed to but they would "cook it for themselves" right there on the spot and share it with us. Such cool people. I want to go back.

It's available to rent on DVD from Blockbuster, but also can be found online streaming presumably with the director's approval so it can be viewed by as many people as possible.
