I give Mos Def the up-and-comer vote.
He's held a good range of character and leading roles in a pretty solid and diverse string of movies: Spike Lee's Bamboozled = his controversial movie Carmen: A Hip Opera = his crappy ensemble movie Monster's Ball = His crappy Oscar movie Showtime = his crappy Eddy Murphy movie Brown Sugar = his crappy chick flick The Italian Job = his crappy (gag me) remake The Woodsman = his quiet, little indie picture It's like he got all his crappy movies that it seems like everybody has to do out of the way first. "Do the stuff you gotta do before you do the stuff you wanna do." Now, he has the rest of his career to do nothing but movies he wants, if he plays his cards right. So far, he's done pretty good: -Something the Lord Made -Lackawanna Blues -Hitchhiker's Guide -16 Blocks -Chapelle Show -Be Kind Rewind -Cadillac Records (his Chuck Berry was amazing) -Next Day Air They may not all be instant classics, but it seems like he's doing what he wants. |

Though I'm not a fan of her work I'd go with Kate Winslet, at least as the most critically-acclaimed actress. 4 Oscar nominations with 1 win, 5 BAFTA nominations with 1 win, and 5 Golden Globe nominations with 1 win.

Also, sometimes a role and film look good on paper but just are not executed well in production. |

based on personal opinion of the films in the 2000s
i'd say Christian Bale is also my pick, easily. Equilibrium Reign of Fire Laurel Canyon, which is not my typical movie at all, but for some reason i liked it Batman Begins The Prestige 3:10 to Yuma The Dark Knight Terminator Salvation and looks to be Public Enemies |
