Commando looks very solid on BD and isn't going to look any better.

The Godfather is a great example. After years of constant use of the negative elements, it was in pretty rough shape.

A re-master typically just involves making a new telecine transfer from the film's negative, interpositive or the best source available for a new home video/broadcast release. A new HD master must be created for blu-ray releases if one does not already exist, since pre-HD transfers (those created for TV, VHS, Laserdisc, etc) are not of sufficient quality.

A new master may also be created if better technology allows the studio to create a higher quality version. Many DVDs were re-issued in "re-mastered" editions a few years after their initial releases, because the technology improved.

Now of course during the re-mastering process, it's entirely possible that dirt, specks and other bits of grime might be cleaned from the elements they are working with. But I wouldn't refer to that as a restoration, just general cleanup and maintenance as part of the mastering process.

Since most major studios now take great care in storing their film negatives in vaults and other climate controlled facilities, a full-on restoration is probably overkill and unnecessary for most films of the modern era (especially those only 20 years old or younger).
Good post.

The reason being is that Lowry did not have to do extensive work on Goldeneye, Tomorrow Never Dies, The World Is Not Enough, and Die Another Day.
I must correct, Goldeneye was a totally different (and botched) HD transfert. The rest only used the original DI for the films, with minor digital restoration like color adjustment etc.

As for Commando, yes, a new transfert would be welcomed. Note that thought the americans go their widescreen anamorphic version very late this decade, the same transfert was issued in R2 years ago.

The real problem at heart is that Commando is a victim of the "early release on new format syndrome", which also plague movies like Strange Days, or Escape from LA ie the movies are issued in the early days of the new format using a made for the precedent format transfert. Since they are already out, and not selling tons, the company don't bother remastering it because they have other films to take care of.

With each new format, the majors just go back to their files, and reissue first the same back catalogue films they issued first on the precedent format (ie lazy marketing decisions), give or take movies made in the intervening decade. That's why you have ID4, Commando, Dante's Peak, Twister, or others always issued early and left to rot until the format is nearly out.

You're great. That's what I think... COMMANDO got a damn DVD edition in 1997. And they totally screwed it up. I would have preferred a special edition in 2001 or so, like they did for BTILC.
Escape from L.A. followed the same path in the DVD treatment department, and will follow the same path for the BD release (!).
This is pathetic and sad. Both titles sell very very good, and share the same amount of fans.

While COmmando is a fun cheesie movie I truly wonder if the studios would truly want to spend a good amount of money to give it a good transfert?

You don't know the sales figures for that tile. It could have sold poorly for all you know.

Bennett was classic, but Dan Hedaya even more so. Everything about this '80's campfest is hilarious. The only reason they got that short dude was so that Arnie could hold him by his ankle. And Jumping out of the jetplane from the landing gear. When one thinks about the plot, there are easier ways to destabilize South American governments, but they are hell of a lot less entertaining. Holy shit, I need to watch this movie again.

Since they did the Director's Cut in 2007... I bet they DID know it was a good seller.

I think we can be happy with the current BD release. Afterall not all movies will end up looking as great as others for different reasons.

With Shia Labouf as Matrix, and Zac Efron as Bennett.

I have this movie on DVD (UK version 2003). Is it worth to upgrade? What's your opinion?
