Hm, I dunno. Retail certainly wouldn't be happy to take a 100 dollar hit because Sony decided to drop it's price. There must be some sort of reimbursement program.

And I can also see Microsoft dropping the price but it will hurt them more. If they continue to drop their price people will have second thought. It will reminds them of the original Xbox when PS2 was still more expensive than Gamecube (yes, Nintendo dropped it from $249 to $99) and Xbox (from $349 and down to $149).

The PS2 could stay at a higher price than the Xbox and GC and outsell them for the same reason the Wii can, it has the "mindshare" of the masses.

I'm a retailer and I can tell you they price protect everything. If a game goes down in price, they will give you the difference. The same goes for the hardware.

If retailers were not price protected they would lose millions on everything....dvds, games, electronics, cars, ect.... If a manufacture changes the SRP, it's almost a guarantee they'll price protect the difference.

however the one thing they don't priceprotect is used product. That means those retailers selling used hardware for $300 will take the hit when the PS3 goes down in price because obviously they can't sell a used unit the same as a new one.

Well ok, spread the word that the PS3 will drop $100 by this fall. Then watch the PS3 sales til then.
The Wii will probably come out with new skin and other features and probably a price drop for Black Friday, then announce rather panickly and publicly that Wii consoles are in short supply for the holiday season!! Genious marketing.
Why advertise the PS3 will be cheaper in 4 months by $100 and expect growing sales now?? Seriously, you should run a business ROTFLMFAO

I don't think Nintendo will cut their price when it's still doing a good job. Okay, the sales have dropped a bit in Europe and Japan. But is still selling like a bullet train in the US market. Remember the month when it sold 750k without a blockbuster game. That's insane and Marvelous who is Wii's biggest supporter for core games are disappointed by it's performance and have a hard time to sell on Wii and want to port the games that are gonna release on Wii to PS3/360 to make some profit.

Anyway, Sony has been working on PS3 slim since the rumors started to boost on the internet and Sony had to deny them because they wouldn't have sold any PS3 if they started to confirm PS3 slim at $299 when there are several months before they can release it. It's business, people, and if you want to get rid of the recent SKU's on the shelves at retailers you better be quiet if you are in Sony's situation.

Even if this is too early to say but I hope they have learn from this gen that it's absolutely pointless to come out with a expensive console and think the brand will sell your console. They need to work their way up after the disappointment of E3 '06 and the whole 2007. The price is a main factor and if they want to make blu-ray becoming the standard on the market they have to bring that PS3 slim to the market and that's what they are doing now. And especially big focus on games. Square Enix can suck it and expect Nomura and Kitase to leave the company because S-E is a mess right now and people want Squaresoft back.

Stringer responds to price cut pressure from Activision

Sony's Sir Howard Stringer wasn't scared by Activision CEO Bobby Kotick's suggestion that his company may have to stop supporting the PlayStation 3 if the price didn't decrease. "He likes to make a lot of noise," Stringer said, discussing the statement at the Allen & Company Sun Valley Conference -- the same event at which, last year, he described the Wii as "an expensive niche game device." "He's putting pressure on me and I'm putting pressure on him. That's the nature of business."

If Sony cut the price of the PS3 as Kotick suggested, Stringer said that "I (would) lose money on every PlayStation I make -- how's that for logic." It's actually a kind of logic that Sony is quite familiar with, given that the company loses money on every PlayStation 3 it makes right now.

Personally I think the photo is one of my favorites to date, lol.
