Talking Thanx

MARWIN, really appreciate ur respond, grateful for the extensive analysis. Got one more question, are there any policies that could or will support one format than the other. Or is it up to market forces to settle down the format battle, because at the end of the day, its all about winning the hearts and mind of us, the consumers. What ur opinion on this?

It was IBMs chairman Lou Gerstner that kinda avoided a format war for the current DVD format. IBM is not member of the BDA, nor is it member of the HDDVDPR... I think IBM already is involved. IBM is supplier for Microsoft's Xbox360 system, Sony's Playstation 3 and Nintendo's Revolution. IBM is the big winner of the next-generation console war anyway. It also was involved in the Cell project. Sony has a fab. for production of Cell processors, but Toshiba..? Anyway, they'll supply if Sony and Toshiba need more Cells.

The Blu-ray format is still very new, so there's not a lot of web sites that cover it yet. You should definitely check out the official Blu-ray Disc Association (BDA) web site at http://www.blu-raydisc.com/, they offer lots of general information, technical details and white papers. You should also be able to find a lot of general information at our web site https://www.blu-ray.com/.

What do you mean by "policies"? If you mean factors that might decide the format war then there's plenty, but nothing's definitive. It will be a combination of studio support, hardware support, retail support, marketing, quality, features, pricing, etc. The wildcard is the PS3 which could be a hit or miss depending on the final price and what people are willing to pay for it.

You want links?
Here's one, it'll probably suit your needs
http://news.com.com/Try+scratching+t...3-5455621.html
Quote:
In a test conducted by CNET News.com, a DVD treated with TDK's coating survived a determined attack with a screwdriver and a Sharpie permanent marker with no effect on playability--a remarkable feat considering how easily standard DVDs can be damaged, for example, by children.
But please know, it'll be probably only on TDKs discs.

If you want more technical details, just ask.

Hi,

the link you got, the article "Try to scratch this DVD" is very interesting and
provides the technical details you might need. You shall read'it carefully and follow the link that brings you to the TDK patent (US 2005024881):
http://appft1.uspto.gov/netacgi/nph-...C/acetophenone)

For more information you can check "DURABIS" this is the name of the TDK hard-coat.

I am currently doing a Demand Estimation paper for Blu-Ray media as part of my marketing major courses.

My question is, how does the selling of blu-ray discs to movie studios work? I assume this process should be very similar to how currently selling DVD discs for the purpose of putting movies on work.

The idea i have in mind right is this:

1.) Movie studio (eg. Warner Bros) decides to use Blu-Ray discs to release their High Def Movies on
2.) Warner Bros orders their purchasing department to contact a Blu-Ray manufacturer (eg.Sony) to buy a batch of blank BluRays (i assume this will be some sort of purchase agreement contract)

my question is how does the licensing of BluRay come into play? Do you have to be a supporting member of BDA first in order to purchase a shipment of blank BluRays for the purchase of putting movies on?

I appreciate ANY comments or input, thanks!!!

another question..in my reading it seems that blu-ray was supposed to launch in 2003 and it was delayed until now. Is there anywhere that explains why it was delayed? When I try to look all I see is articles on it being delayed from May 2005 to June 2006. THANKS!
