i have yet to see a bd on my 84 inch that looks anywhere near the quality of dvd, even the bd's that got very poor pq ratings. when you blow up dvd it will never compare to bd, no matter how good your upscaler is.

While all blu's imo are better than a dvd...Some I was not impressed with were
Predator, Gangs of New York, Dumb and Dumber...But don't regret any of these(except maybe the $35 i paid on Predator)

It depends how much filtering and DNR the studios have applied to the video. More filtering=less resolution or detail

Sure. I think blu-ray transfer process needs attention to ensure all movie transfers have similar technical specs (depending on the quality of the original content) aiming for a consistent outcome.

The Beast and Escape from New York are the worst Blu-ray titles I've seen screen-captures for. They're literally upconverted DVD's on Blu-ray deescs.

I have a few that look as bad as DVD or close to it. A few that come to mind are Jacob's Ladder, The Arrival, Frailty, Bad Boys (The Sean Penn movie), and the version of Donnie Darko I have. Really a shame there isn't a better version of Jacob's Ladder available than this. That movie deserves better. And Wolf is better than those but it comes to mind cuz it amuses me how often people pick it when I post in that "Pick a title from the above user's collection you would like to own" thread. I guess it must be cuz it's out of print, can't possibly be the transfer cuz trust me, it's pretty bad, lol.

Kentucky Rifle is one I bought recently that was a bit of a double edged sword. It's a BD-R for starters. It's definitely the best the movie has ever looked (I mean...it's in the correct aspect ratio) but man, it really looks BARELY high definition. If it is at all. I've definitely seen DVDs that look better. Just not DVDs of Kentucky Rifle. Thankfully it's not a terribly important movie to me. I only bought it because it is THE worst western I've ever seen and therefore, it entertains me more than it should..

A lot of old Blu-rays from companies like Warner, Universal, and Paramount look no different than DVDs upscaled to 1080p.

I think most of those look pretty mediocre because they're mostly low-to-average bitrate VC-1 encodes intended for HD-DVD. The one exception was "Prisoner of Azkaban" which is closer to 20mbps.

I don't know what the 4Ks look like as I only rebought "Goblet of Fire" on 4K and I would say it's better than the Blu-ray, but not massively better since I think all of the movies except the first two are from 2K DIs.

Really wish WB would have just released a remastered Blu-ray set, done in MPEG-4 AVC with DTS-HD MA 7.1/DTS:X audios.
