The only one of these I didn't know about was Gibson for Gladiator. I am not a fan of either Crowe or Gibson but I am glad Crowe got the part.

I still think that Katie Holmes thing is just a fairytale

Harrison Ford dominates all roles apparently, haha

Val Kilmer turned down the role of Jeffrey Beaumont in Blue Velvet, which went to Kyle MacLachlan. Kyle's a great match with Lynch, but I think Val could've done a great job too.

Jack Nicholson wasn't the first choice in any of his Oscar winning roles.

-One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest: James Caan
-As Good As It Gets: John Travolta
-Terms Of Enderment: Burt Reynolds, Paul Newman & Harrison Ford

Jack is the man!

I saw an interview for League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen where Sean Connery said that he read the script for The Matrix and didn't understand it, so he turned it down. It became a massive success. Same thing happened when he read the Lord Of The Rings scripts. He didn't understand them, so he turned THEM down. They became a massive success. When he read the League Of Extraordinary Gentlemen script, same thing happened. He didn't understand it. So, knowing what happened with the last two scripts that he didn't understand, he accepted thinking that it would be a massive success.

^ You can't really blame Connery for that though. At least his thought was for the better (despite the film being a pile of something not very nice). I remember seeing it in cinemas, and being absolutely shocked at how bad it was. I'm glad he wasn't in LOTR though, I can't imagine his Scottish accent would have been very good.

Speaking of which Alison Doody (played Elsa in Indiana Jones and the last crusade) was Peter Jacksons first choice for Galdriel. I think we are also lucky here as Cate Blanchett was perfect for the role.

Cool

There's literally hundreds of examples, this is not at all an uncommon phenomenon.

The Rock turned down The One
Natalie Portman turned down The Constant Gardener, X-Men and Lolita
Nicolas Cage turned down Lord Of The Rings
Dougray Scott turned down X-Men
Tom Cruise turned down Alexander and I Am Legend
Brad Pitt turned down Bride & Prejudice, About A Boy, American Psycho, The Departed, The Fountain, State Of Play
Arnold Schwarzenegger turned down Die Hard
Julia Stiles turned down The Fog
Cameron Diaz turned down The Crow
Steven Seagal and Jean-Claude Van Damme turned down Demolition Man
Julia Roberts turned down Basic Instinct, Sleepless In Seattle, Shakespeare In Love, The Gofather Part III and Intolerable Cruelty
Jet Li turned down The Matrix
Jackie Chan turned down Lethal Weapon 4
Sophie Marceau turned down The English Patient
Denise Richards turned down Showgirls
Johnny Depp turned down Interview With The Vampire, Titanic, Sin City
Aishwarya Rai turned down Hitch, Mr & Mrs Smith, Troy, Rush Hour 3 and a number of highly succesful Indian films

Etc, etc, etc.....

My head would have exploded at how awesome that would be. The Travolta/Cage film was good too, even the minor appearance of Thomas Jane as the prisoner in that movie too.

Man, the biggest surprise to me was Mel Gibson in Gladiator. Holy S***!

Wow!

Vic Vega was supposed to come back for Pulp Fiction?! That would've been epic, but also would've changed the movie too much. John Travolta as his brother Vincent was classic. I remember hearing something about Tarantino wanting to bring back Vic someday, that would be pretty sweet

Really? Seems like a natural for the part.

The real question is, can you imagine Crowe as Braveheart?

Turns out I can.

I think I can agree with Crowe in Braveheart. AS far as Gladiator, I can not imagine Gibson pulling it off.

That was a pretty interesting read. Sandra Bullock was the first choice to play Maggie in Million Dollar Baby, and that role ended up going to Hillary Swank.

As far as Katie Holmes and TDK, I've always heard that she wasn't asked to return, but I guess that wasn't the case.
