Question: my itunes library was on this computer with all my songs. Is there a way to just have my ipod sync up to my new computer once I get it loaded up this weekend? Or will I really have to load all songs into it again?
I would try hooking up your suspect hard drive as a secondary hard drive on a known good system, as opposed to an external hard drive reader. Just an idea; not that it is guaranteed to solve your problem or anything.

Absolutely agree. I'm definitely NOT interested in downloadable media.

So...the update is that the hard drive still isn't being recognized. I tried the hard drive enclosure and, although I can still hear the drive speed up normally, I never get any sign that it's showing up.

So now it's off to data recovery. I got a quote of $590 for everything...if I decide to go with it. This was the explanation of what they think happened:
Quote:
Your hard drive most likely has firmware corruption. Typically the drive spins up fine, doesn't click but never show up in the system or shows up with 0 capacity. It's a very common problem with Seagate's new 7200.11 family - we receive several requests a week with this issue. Data recovery in such case requires use of specialized equipment and experience to access firmware on the platters and repair corrupted modules.
So now I have to decide which place to send it to. I'd just like to know if it's there or not.

In other news, I've ordered two new drives from Newegg and they should be here tomorrow, I would assume. I'm going to buy a program that will clone my OS drive and install both of them. That way, if this should happen again, I'll be covered.

Let this be a lesson, boys and girls.....

So someone on another forum actually suggested that I contact Seagate, if it really is a firmware problem, perhaps they'll be able to do something about it.

Hope you didn't buy more Seagate drives...

Why don't you run both drives in RAID 1 configuration that writes everything to both disks? That way you won't have to clone the drives, the computer automatically does it for you.

In this case, I'd buy two drives from 2 different manufacturers to avoid the chance of receiving 2 drives from a bad batch

Off subject slightly, I would like to cry too!! I accidentally dropped my iPod into the toilet yesterday full of pee! I charged it the bathroom the night before and woke up yesterday morning pee'd, then unhooked the charger (over the toilet) from the iPod and it slipped right through my fingers into the waiting yellow sea.
Now I'm out a iPod and a good running device.

LMAO! Sorry for your loss, but this gave me a chortle.

I had to format & reinstall XP over the weekend due to terrible IE performance, fortunately it went without a hitch!

I've had to do that many times. Lucky for me my dad works on computers all the time!! That does suck dude because you have to start from scratch unless you have backup.

I had a smilar incident 2 weeks ago. I dropped my cell phone in the toilet, albeit with no pee.

Stupid question time...

Why {in god's name} would you charge it in the bathroom?

I dunno, my sister has dropped her phone -
In the toilet
In the tub while there was water in it
Out the window of her car
Into the pool while swimming

Oh I know, she's also a teenage mother so intelligence is kind of out the window at this point.

Because there's a free outlet in there so to speak. The power bar on my side of the bed is full. The charger wouldn't fit there. I've done this before, just haven't dropped it in a open toilet before yesterday morning.

Uh.

Unplug something unnecessary, and plug in something {like your ipod} that you won't have to worry about it ending up in the toilet.

That's why the only thing I plug in in the bathroom is the toaster, so I can have sweet sweet toast while having a bath.

So here's an update:

I did a LOT of research. The drive I had from Seagate really was a mess. Horrendous. They released a firmware to fix the issue and it bricked all the drives that updated. They apparently acknowledged the problem and started fixing drives but aren't any longer.

So I contacted a data repair service that has dealt with a lot of these drives and I'm sending it out tomorrow. They say that 100% of the drives that have been shipped to them have had this firmware problem. And it'll be put onto a better drive for $600. Ugh.

In happier news, I just got both of the drives that I ordered from Newegg yesterday morning. And i didn't pay for shipping. That place freakin' rocks.
