Default I may be making yet another change, lol

I said something to the wife today about a possible move to our side garage for movie watching. She told me as long as she had a TV in the living room she didn't care what I did.

So I was bored tonight/this morning and decided to see how feasible this would be. The overall size of the space is (11'3"w X 30'8"l X ~9'h). We have a 2 car attached garage and this one just currently houses my tools and I could easily ad a wall to keep the front half usable as a work area (13' deep) while using the remaining space for a theater. Light would be non existent as in with the lights off and the door closed now you can't see your hand directly in front of your face As far as audio goes this would also allow more volume as night as I would not be near the sleeping baby (but would still have the monitor for my nightly duties )

The biggest I can go in between the speakers in a 2.35:1 setup would be this current picture. I could go as large as 128" 2:35:1 screen if I moved it up above the speaker height.

Here is a picture I took after going a little crazy with painters tape, this layout would have me building the homemade anamorphic lense to fill the screen:

The garage is finished and insulated but does not contain HVAC, although it's normally pretty comfortable in their regardless of the time of year...and the door is 10ft from sliding door to the kitchen.

Someone tell me I haven't totally lost my mind on this

Bill

So, how do you feel about the acoustics in there, with the garage doors?

That would also be my concern. Picture-wise, everything should be spectacular, but "garage acoustics" could be an issue.

This would basically create 2 separate rooms, the theater being accessible via the side door off the patio and the work area being accessible via the garage door. The possibility also exists to add a door in between them if needed.

As far as the actual acoustics go I can add sound treatments where necessary....also the entire thing already has carpet on the floor as well, lol, granted its carpet on concrete but carpet all the same . This would be a much easier space to control the acoustics as opposed to where everything currently is, which is a nightmare and must meet the WAF, what little she actually cares. Also If I was to do this in the basement I would have to build the entire room from scratch vs one wall and the ceiling would also be about 18" lower down there.

Just curious but other then the garage door how would the acoustics be different from any other room?

One possibility is to omit the garage door and build a wall in it's place. On the outside of the wall you could make it look like a false garage door.

For the most part that is correct. We have a 2 car attached that we only utilize one side of so the other car would now be parked there.

OK, here is a quick diagram of the possible layout.

So you would have a work area in front, correct? Then your HT in the rear, correct? I assume the garage door is in the rear so when you open it will the HT be exposed to the outside?

****Edit****
I see your drawing. I like the idea.

I like the idea of you have for this theater, Bill. I don't know if it will matter much, but you might consider adding a low sub-floor for better insulation and sound absorption deflection from the concrete floor.

How high is the ceiling in the garage? Is it finished or open to the roof above?

Finished and insulated and the ceiling is ~ 9ft tall (that is the one exact measurement I didn't write down during my bout of insanity this morning, lol) I will also post a better picture of it tonight.

I lived in Cincy for a number of years....... You will want to add baseboard heat, and a though-the-wall A/C unit.........

I didn't see any comment yet on the MOST IMPORTANT piece to your post. Congrats on having a wife that gives you that much room to do what you want.

Tho I suppose it is your understanding of the conversation at hand, and the application of your use of her given "power" for this situation only that keeps the relationship happy.

Good luck, we can't wait for pictures. I only wish I had that much space to create something new.
