I recently saw on gamespot.com in an announcement for E3 that Sony has plans for downloadable movies as well as music. It didn't list any titles, it said Sony would announce them behind closed doors. I hope they don't do what M$ is doing. I would much rather have the actual BD. Besides, as long as it takes to download just a trailer, there is no way I would pay for a title I can go buy on disc and watch right away.

I'd like to see what sony is doing with the downloads....

and honestly, you can only download so many movies without upgrading the HDD...

I'm sure some people don't mind renting a highly compressed 720p movie by download but I'd rather pay the extra and keep the movie in superb 1080p quality on Blu-ray.

I suspect that the same people complaining about BD+ and the excessive DRM on Blu-ray will be the first in line to tout the downloads here on XBL.

not to mention I would just rent it on demand and not have to spend time downloading...

I didn't think it was THAT bad - Halo 3 looks a lot better than the beta led me to believe, and there looked to be some good stuff coming to XBL arcade. Also, I was happy to see the Disney announcement - the more content on XBL the better, and it's not like they are going to abandon HD optical. Different markets.

It's no biggie. Lionsgate does the same thing. All the hd-dvd guys last year said that was the sign they are going neutral. Nothing happened.

For the record, not all the movies offered ont he XBL MarketPlace are available in hi def. A lot are only available in Standard definition. So just because they are getting a download, it doesnt mean it will be the same as what we have on Bluray, or something we dont have on Bluray.

But in general, the whole "download" thing is really way off. Even the FIOS beta is a great idea but a real bust for now. Really...it took my son 8 HOURS to download "Bridge to Terabithia" for his iPod. And I have the fastest service from AT&T plus a ton of "server iron" 'cuz I'm in the computer industry.

To download anything close to 25-50 GB's like BD or HD-DVD is 10 years out or longer. It's going to take a long time for the telcos to get fiber to the MPOE (Main Point of Entry) for each home in America. I applaud Microsoft's and Verizon's vision...it has to start somewhere...but physical media is a reality for the next 15 years. The DirecTV bird that just went up on July 7 to service their big push into HD has a longevity of about 15 years. Even it is not capable of handling on-demand data streams at the capacity we're talking about here for every home in America.

I'm certainly not putting on-hold any plans to buy BD disks.

Comments & disagreements welcomed.
I disagree. I am able to download a DVD9 movie (roughly between 7 and 8 gb) in under an hour so a 35 gb BD would still take me less time than it would for you to download another film to your ipod.

With the advancement of cable and the fatter pipes that supply it gets easier and easier as well as faster and faster. NTL will soon be trialling their 50mb service. Providing you can max that out you are looking at about 5000-5500k download speed. Granted you will need to pay a fair whack for it but to say its out of sight for a long time is very near sighted.

That would mean approximately 15 mins for a DVD5, 25 mins for a DVD9, BD in about 2 hours if not a little faster depending on size.

physical media is far better than downloadable ones... portablity, tangablity, collectablity, and convienence are all VERY VIABLE proponents for physical media. the xbox 360 as of date has not been very relable for even it's primary purpose of playing games let alone using as a device for playing DLC. i doubt i'll use the PSN version myself... nice to have, but doubtful it'll be useful to me.

I agree that I don't like movie downloads, but I don't think this will be the wave of the future. Sure, there will be a market for it, but will downloads replace phyical media? No way.

I can download approx 1GB every 10 mins, so a BD50 would take just over 8 hours to download, which I wouldn't see as a problem provided they don't expire too quickly, I'd want to have 1-2 weeks to get round to watching it after downloading. This would be a nice alternative to renting movies IMO, but there will always be a place for physical media for collectable movies.

xbox live movie downloads is nothing more than a gimmick, just M$ showing off possibilities. congratulations xbox fans, go spend hours downloading a movie that you cannot play anywhere else except on a machine incapable of 1080p or storing more than a small handful of movies.

unless one had the elite of course... but then again that is even crippled (HDMI 1.2)... and most of the downloads are 720p anyway... M$ sucks.
