Why not more movies on Blu-ray? - Blu-ray Forum

Why do you think there isn't more movies out right now on blu-ray? and only 5or so getting released each week at most?

There are so many Disney, Fox, and Sony movies that I'd love to buy on Blu-Ray, but are not avaialbe. Like indiana jones, or some of the Pixar movies. etc.

Oh, and do you think Transformers will be released on BD when the DVD is released?

First let me say welcome. The reason why more Blurays havent been released is for alot of reasons. One is because studios are strategically releasing certain movies for max profit. Others are waiting on certain private studios ie Star wars is 20th century fox but is licensed under Lucasfilms. Be patient my friend you will see many more blu to be released. Check the coming soon section to get your fill of whats coming out soon. Transformers should be the same release date as the DVD, Stay tuned. . . .

I strongly feel that Pixar is taking their time so they can add some Blu-Ray goodies and have the best possible picture. I think Cars was announced but then postponed.

I voted for Sept as the "tipping point" in the last pole. But I also think Sony, Fox & Disney are delaying releases and not saying much for basically a big splash of long awaited releases come Nov/Dec to basically slay the HD-DUD beast (once and for all) during the holiday shopping frenzy.

If you think about logically, with big hits like Spidey Trilogy, Cars, Transformers, etc all hitting the stores around Nov time frame, you gotta get a player to go with it. And an HD-DUD machine aint gonna fly! I reallly think Universal/Toshiba is going to wake up on Dec 26 feeling like they got ran over by a cement truck.

It makes no sense to release all the back catalogue stuff immediately.

1) some studio's will want to wait until there is sufficient market penetration before releasing big titles, like George Lucas with Star Wars and Indy, or Spielberg with his films. Just look at how prices have gone up on early Disney platinums like Snow White and Beauty and the Beast because DVD hadn't took off as the mass market media it is today when they were released.

2) people only have so much disposable income, and flooding the market with titles would be a bad move for sales.

Yes, Transformers will be released on BD for sure. And most likely with lossless audio now to boot!

They aren't really making much off of back-titles, anyway. One thing they've really seen on both sides is that new releases are what drives sales. Few want to re-buy old titles on BR or HD-DVD when they've already got them on VHS, DVD, Superbit, whatever. Too many people have played that game for too long.

It's the new catalogue titels that sell.

I sympathize, Incog. Have to disagree a bit with you, baccusboy-- My main interest is in rebuying a host of great movies in BD. That's mainly how I will be building my collection. 1080p is almost like seeing them for the first time again. Think there are a lot of people like me, going by posts I've seen. Also have to say that I think the list of titles available in HDDVD in some ways is more attractive overall at the moment than for BD, a frustrating thing. Really don't understand the logic behind several of the choices in what's been released in BD this year, hardly seems calculated to create a surge toward BD, and aren't that many I would spend BD-bucks for. Am I the only one that feels that way?

I used to work at a video store that sold and rented Laserdiscs exclusively. We were the first in town to rent DVDs also. You could still get them here even though we were not one of the 7 test cities. The fact is, there are more blu-ray releases now than there were DVD releases at this point. Some Studios hadn't even released anything at all and took them a while to get going. I remember one man coming in and was looking for Braveheart so he could show off his new DVD player to some visitors he was going to have. I told him that Braveheart wasn't out on DVD. His response was "I thought everything would be on DVD" I then informed him, to his shock, that Paramount hadn't (at that point) decided if they were going to release anything on DVD. Just give it time. The movie studios don't want to flood the market either. They want to get sales the discs they have released before they let out too many movies.

I understand movie studios wanting to sales their Blu-ray moives before they release too many moives, but we all know sells would increase if the movies were price 19.99 or less.

I don't buy any Blu-ray title for more than $21.00, execpt for TV shows like Planet Earth and my preorder of Smallville Season 6. I'm missing alot of FOX titles because of their prices, even at Amazon there around $28 and BB and CC have them for $35.

I know Blu-ray is winning, but I don't feel their pushing hard enough. Hopefully the Holiday season will be the last major push to end HD-DVD.

I disagree about rebuying catalogue titles too. I was a bit cautious at first with Blu Ray, but after spending about 5 nights in a row watching Blu Ray discs, and then going back to a standard DVD, I couldn't believe the difference. I'm now clearing out alot of my movies on DVD, apart from Universal titles, and absolute favourites, in anticipation of being able to buy them on Blu Ray and experience them in Hi Def. I do think this will be the final purchase of many movies though.

I want more movie released also, but I would rather have studios take there time on a release, rather than rushing it and having inferior video/audio.
