Default Help with shelving for movies

Hi I am in the process of remaking my basement and just painted everything. I removed something that was covering a wall and thus now have room to put shelving where I want to put my movies. So far the people on here have had good advice so I thought I'd ask your opinnions for what I should shoot at doing. I want something more horizontal, but if it's verticle that's fine as long as it doesn't go too far up as I have posters and such that I'm going to put up once this is done. Thanks.

Here's a link for a picture of the wall itself. It's 106" long and the walls on the side come out to 14".

I have a very similar space in my home theater room, and I used a series of Billy Bookcases from Ikea that work perfectly. You can set the shelf heights, so DVD cases fit perfectly. The basic bookcase appears to be on sale for $59 each. Here it is on Ikea's site:

http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/ca...ng_room/11683/

If I can I'll post pictures of my setup when I get home tonight. I connected three bookcases, with 2 CD racks in between. I also added doors to the bottom half, to store accessories, such as my sound meter and game controllers. Up top I have a ton of Blu-rays, DVDs, SACDs, and CDs.

Great! Thanks for the advice. If you wouldn't mind getting those pictures up sometime, I'd appreciate it very much.

I too am using Ikea Billy bookcases. See gallery for photos. I did buy two extra shelves per tall bookcase to maximize shelf case. The only thing I don't like about these shelves is the depth. To solve this problem, you can cut 1 by 4 to the width of the shelf as a spacer so that the movies are closer to the front of the shelf.

Check my shelf pics in my gallery. If you want measurements I can send em to you. Mine will hold up to 1,500 movies and it cost me 110.00 to make.

Wow obi- I really like the built-in rack you guys put together. Came out pretty great! The movie racks you guys made look good too.

Have you thought about fitting a removable back to your component rack? could have holes for cabling and air flow but give the front side a bit more "finished" look. Just a thought.

I bought extra shelves as well for the tall units. It's pretty much necessary in order to make full use of it for Blu-ray / DVD cases. I don't mind the depth at all, so I don't use spacers to move my cases forward. However, I do still have some relic VHS tapes of Disney and other films my wife won't part with. I double up on those to minimize their shelf space.

No problem. I was having a bit of computer difficulty at home last night, so I was unable to get the photos up. I'll try again tonight. I think you'll like the Billy Bookcases for that space, because you can tailor the pieces together to fit the space better. I have a corner piece, that comes out flush with the adjoining wall, and then the bookcases follow the length of the recessed area perfectly. It really looks like it was designed for the space. Plus, the bookcases look great, and are inexpensive compared to other bookcases or shelving units.

I built in some shelving with a wrap around small wall to enclose the movies, check out my gallery for pictures. I really like that setup. All I did was buy 1 ft shelving at Menards with brackets and cut them to fit.

I have two Malm dressers from Ikea that I use. there are four drawers in each and each drawer holds about 100 dvds or blu-rays. I prefer to not have my movies displayed for a cleaner look. I did have to reinforce the drawers with 1/2" strips of wood I glued to the underside of each drawer to make them more sturdy but that was fairly easy.

I had one of those back when I was still a teen living with my folks. I had that to use for DVD storage a few years back when my brother was little. I had regular shelves in my room and he caused about $200 in damage.
