I have 2 12" drivers for my sub powered by 2 channels of my amp. Fills my room nicely.
My Sony earbuds were 80$ and they get down to 5Hz. (So it says)

That is another thing, room size & room conditions.

Not much air to move between the earbuds and your ear drum though...

its good that people are starting to take notice that room acoustics play a huge roll in the sound of their systems. You can spend $10,000 and it will still sound like crap if the room isn't right.

Here's an interesting question:

At what rate is audio technology improving in our home audio systems? We all know that video technology is increasing at a rapid rate (e.g. resolution just keeps increasing), but audio?

My guess is that video technology and audio technology of home entertainment systems are improving over the years as the following graphs. After all, can audio quality really keep improving forever?

I agree. We've reached our limit in audio technology (well perhaps not with receiver technology but certainly with speaker technology). It's now just a matter of forking out the bucks to buy the best and largest speakers out there and acoustically treating our room.

With all due respect, you couldn't be more wrong. There's a long way to go before we can declare audio "done"! High end audio is improving every year, and show no sign of abating. And by "high end", I don't mean the sort of stuff one can find in places like Best Buy and Circuit City. I'm talking about speciality audio from manufacturers such as Audio Research, Krell, Goldmund, SME, Magnepan, Martin Logan, etc., etc.
