I've never gone shopping for Blu-Ray rips, but aren't the vast majority of them in .mkv containers? If so... you MIGHT get video that was surprisingly decent... but there is NO WAY you're getting lossless audio.

you'll find those type of "one up guys" everywhere. what ever you have done, seen or heard.. he has one better.

i would personally ask him to burn me a copy of the said downloaded BD movie. then when he hands you a DVD copy or worse yet a DVD movie taken with a camcorder.. just laugh at him "wheres the bluray"

it is possible to download Transformers:ROTF blu-ray rip but that is what it is....a rip....It is actually ripped from the blu-ray disk but it of course is compressed. The rip is about 11 gb and is held in a x264 mkv container. From the specs it looks like the video is 1920*800 @ 8935 kbps while the audio is DTS | 1509 Kbps.

This is going to look a lot better than many other stupid downloads of this movie but it will not even come close to the actual Blu-ray release. Of course you can burn this 11 gb file onto a blank Blu-ray but just like others have said....what is the point of that....to burn money??

To make a long story short video quality is going to be hugely diminished and there cannot be lossless uncompressed audio in a rip....just tell your coworker to buy the actual release and be done with it.

I say call this ******* on his bluff...tell him to rip a copy of ROTF and burn it to a Blu-ray and that you will have all of your coworkers over to watch this "amazing" rip that he has. Then laugh when it looks worse than an upscaled DVD and the dialouge doesn't line up with the actors lips moving. Then you can get out your copy of ROTF and have all your friends be awed at the quality and everyone will know he's an idiot. Just my 2 cents though

That is an amazingly accurate description of a co-worker of mine who was bragging to me that he has 8TB of movies that he has rented and copied, and yes, he did attempt to belittle me because I have purchased all my movies and I did exactly what you said to do.

Yea, they usually re-encode to 720p at a slightly lower quality and only use the core track...if that.

not condoning piracy but without fansubs the anime scene would not be what it is now , off course when it licensed then you should always buy the original

Explain it to your boss (dad) that a criminal is working for him. How can your boss/dad trust someone who not only breaks the law, but brags about it.

Come on guys
Don't throw rotten tomatoes on his c-workers
All he wants and expecting some bells and whistles
YA that is some bells and whistles
to the OP
give him some bells and whistles from the other end

If FBI knew what he is doing they will give him some bells and whistles and more Knives made of ice

What a stupid

There's nothing better than original
The original is too original to copy(you have to compramise somewhat somewhere-atleast in the end of buying the blank or buying the burner)

like others have said...why waste your time to download a blu-ray thats gonna be way over 25gb...then burn it to a disc thats $10-15...most likely its just a .mkv file...which doesnt have the hd audio

not sure where you guys buy your blank blu ray discs from, but single layer discs are under $5 and dual layer discs can be had for around or under $10 each.

I saw a "pre-release" version of a movie that a guy picked up in the Phillipines. PQ and AQ were bad, certainly not worth the ridiculously low price he paid for it.

I hate copies of music or movies. It isn't the original quality. Everyone says it is just 1s and 0s. But it isn't that simple. Tell them to play a CD and then plug their iPod into the stereo. If their stereo is half way decent, the difference is noticeable.

Copies of music make buying stuff harder. Selections are down and prices are not good. The Tower stores closed because of downloads, legal and not.

I'm in Taiwan and people download a lot here, and buy pirate stuff at the night markets. But from what I've seen, it is unwatchable. I can't see wasting the time or even a dollar to get involved in that stuff. You get whatyou pay for.

Ask the co-worker to burn you a copy. He'll probably stop and stutter and say well he heard a friend of his did it, but he doesn't actually do it.

An exact COPY will have the same quality as the original, how do you think studios make thousands of COPIES of movies to be sold ....adding the iPod argument is moot since you're adding compression to the mix in order to make the files smaller in size thus easier to download. No doubt his co-worker is downloading files that have been greatly compressed for this very reason.

Hate to burst the bubble guys, but blank Blu's can be as low as $2 these days, and compression/ripping tech is getting better all the time. Granted most don't know what their doing and mess rips up, but their are pretty high quality illegal downloads out their, i have many friends that use that route for all their movie needs, and many are more then watchable, and most are indistinguishable from their DVD counterpart.

When it comes to BD's however i have yet to see one that looked close, most the time they are DVD files labeled as BD's, much in the way most my friends also have mislabeled music on their IPODS.

I don't know why you care though OP, obviously something about that got to you and you feel the need to defend you purchase, DON'T. Either you are happy with what you got or your not, and what he is doing doesn't hurt you, so who cares.

I hear similar things quite often, but that does not mean that i don't enjoy my BLU's at home or their RIPs when i am at their house. Frankly this is in no way a loss to anyone but the burner who is losing quality and since he doesn't even know that, well...

P.S. Think laws need to be changed so i can legally backup my DVDs like i do with my music, it's BS that i have had to buy multiples of the same season of a show to replace one disc, i paid for the content, i should be able to secure that investment in spite of a easy to damage container.

@Travis- true illegal downloads of music suck to a critical listener, but their are many ways you can get a 1:1 copy of your own store bought material and still have the advantages of an IPOD, and if space is an issue highbitrates and new compression formats can make even sized files sound better

Bill,

Why the need to split hairs? From what I said, "I hate copies of music or movies. It isn't the original quality. Everyone says it is just 1s and 0s. But it isn't that simple." I think it is easy enough to infer I mean illegal copies. Also "it isn't that simple," means there is more to the story, like compression. Why do some members here feel the need to get everything spelled out?

I know copies done in the home use compression and copies made by the studios are EXACT copies. What did you think, I only buy or want the masters to play in my own private theater.

I understand some people will convert their music 1:1, and the quality will improve. I don't see the point all my CDs are on a shelf and I can play them easily. Many people I've run into are happy with the peer to peer stuff and think it is great. Most people who are involved in copying illegally, claim excellent quality is there, but usually it isn't. My MOOT point with an iPod is to show them the difference in quality. From what you are saying I guess you mean the quality is the same and it is just compressed, so that is why my point is moot?

Bill, for you I will be more specific. I don't like copies of movies that are produced illegally, whether they be downloaded or copied form an original disc that was purchased from an authorized retailer and then compressed and ripped, many times to a blank disc that is inferior to the discs that the studios use. Also, I don't like copies of music, that are ripped or downloaded and compressed, and either uploaded to an iPod or burnt to an inferior disc.

Hope you are not still
