I would honestly buy the HD DVD version if I had a HD DVD player...I like having the extra features. Oh well at least I can finally see this movie that everyone is talking about.

The number of Blu Rays they sell will blought out the sun, so I guess HD-DVD will have to fight in the shade. As with most millitay ingagments Blu Ray will win the 300 battle because of are superior number of troops.

I will note that this is the first HD DVD I'm really interested in seeing the Picture in Picture special feature. PinP commentary tracks don't mean much to me, but I'm quite curious as to how much they built in the way of sets. Doubtful I'll watch the whole feature like that, but as a film buff that really is a cool concept for an extra.
I'm curious I bet you plan to watch both. Please tell which looks better...

Thanks a bunch!

The blu version is cheaper so it should sell more.

Blu-Ray will outsell HD-DVD by alot. Most neutral owners are getting the Blu-Ray cause the HD-DVD is a combo...

Amazon now shows:

#2 300 DVD
#6 300 Blu-Ray
#12 300 HD-DVD

Pulling away fellas

One thing I noticed - #1 is The Secret on DVD...WTF is that about?

Also worth noting at #13 is 5th element Remastered...

It's almost impossible to tell the difference. HDDVD can't read fast enough to create a 1080P image, so if your set doesn't support that resolution you'll get exactly zero benefit from blu-ray. What's more, you need a really big screen (at least 60 inches to expand the image) and have to sit really close (more than a foot and you lose it bcause the effect is tiny) to find jaggies.

So if you don't have:
A-a five foot television
B-that can produce 1080P
C-and want to sit far enough away that you can actually see what you're watching

then the format is irrelevant to what you'll see.

People will weigh in differently, because a lot of people shape their opinions based on what they want to believe, rather than the evidence staring them in the face.

If you don't meet those criteria the only difference you can in reality experience is that, since Sony and Disney absorb beyond normal production expenses, blu-ray discs are usually a few bucks cheaper.

I'm not expecting any difference in terms of PQ or SQ. The reason I want to check out the HDDVD is the different special features. The reson I'll watch both is because I've got a 32 inch Sanyo that I expect the BLU to look great on, and my Dad's got a Sharp projector that does 1080i on a 10 foot screen. I expect that to look pretty decent too. And his Polk's are gonna tear up my Onkyo's. So I'll watch it on both formats, and I'll enjoy it on both formats.

I'm a HUGE supporter of Blu-ray (and a reviewer - see my signature), but in the case of '300' I must admit that the HD-DVD feature with the "unCRUSHED" P-I-P "no CGI" bluescreen included version of the film is pretty freakin' impressive. I'm very glad I got my hands on a copy of both formats! Mind you, I'll only put in the HD-DVD version when I want to see that feature. Otherwise it's BLU all the way.

P.S. My reference to "unCRUSHED" refers to the purposeful visual manipulation of the film video image to be oversaturated and extremely grainy. It was the artistic choice of Zack Snyder to honour the artistry of the original graphic novel. Since it was used for the master of the film, this crappy image is unavoidable... despite which version you decide to purchase.

Basically it is a philosophy that believes anything you want can be obtained by wishing for it hard enough, and then the universe will adapt to provide you with your wish.

The universe is a cosmic ATM machine at your disposal.

The disturbing counter message is: If you're unhappy, poor, or unhealthy it is your own damn fault.

As long as it doesn't take away from the main feature, all is fine. But, 300 has a ton of intentional grain, and I have to believe the tossing away of all that HD DVD bandwidth is going to affect the PQ.

If Warner did BD encodings, things would be fine. Until they do, I'll take the attitude that I don't want them using TrueHD or PiP on HD DVD. And that has nothing to do with greating a disparity, but rather insuring the best PQ for Blu-ray. Of course, I still want LPCM on the BD.

Let's face it, HD DVD is already causing too many damn compromises for ALL of us.
