No, it's to protect the Japanese window and to take advantage of the Oscar push

I've got most Ghibli movies on DVD already, but I wouldn't mind at all upgrading them. The sooner the better. But I guess we'll have to be very patient to get our hands on those little gems on Blu-ray ;(

I hadn't got around to looking at all the Snow White extras on my UK BD set (I saw most of the included classic DVD ones years back), but I had to check this out straight away... it looked great. What a tease they are.

There are a few brief clips of Ghibli movies in HD on the documentary Blu-ray about Kazuo Oga, 'The man who made Totoro's Forest' (background artist on several Ghibli films). It's a nice documentary for Ghibli fans, it has English subtitles too.

I highly doubt we'll see proper (e.g. not upscaled TV stuff like that Spirited Away one) Blu-rays of Ghibli's movies anywhere outside Japan first. Buy you guys in Region A are lucky this time, as everything in Japan will play, whether it's region coded or not (being in the UK all the Japanese DVDs have been great here, especially considering they all have English subtitles on them).

You can actually get the pre-Ghibli first feature length film by Miyazaki, Castle of Cagliostro on Blu-ray in Japan also, but weirdly it's only 1080i, and has no English subs or dub.

I can't wait for all the Ghibli features on Blu-ray, they're amongst my favourite films.

I have no knowledge of this genre.

FWIW. Spirited Away will be shown on UK HD Film4 Monday. It gives newbies like me an opportunity to gauge what all the fuss is about

Spirited Away is spellbinding. I'm not really into the animated film genre but watching this lead me to seek out others like it. Why no BD yet in the US?

Spirited Away hasn't been released on Blu-ray yet in Japan (nor is it coming this year), and it won't be released in the US until some time after it's been released in Japan. Japan will be getting Princess Mononoke soon.

Spirited Away is the one Studio Ghibli film I am waiting for a BR transfer. Have the DVD, but would sorely want to own a native 1080/24p Blu-Ray copy of the film.

My wife and I discovered this gem in 2005. We like it so much, we were thinking of naming our daughter "Chihiro"...

IMHO, a great anime film that can be enjoyed by both children and adults. Would love to be able to show it to our children, for the first time, with a Blu-Ray transfer.

Please hurry up with the release Disney. This one has been gathering dust for for way too long... Especially considering the source for this thread is 2009!

It wasn't released in Japan yet, so there is nothing Disney can do. They have to wait like us.
