The 2005 DVD upconverts nicely on a blu-ray player, but it's still no blu-ray. Just imagine what the film would look like when it's remastered and color-timed!!!!

MGM better release this soon, especially since the interest in computers and hacking is inclining!

You'd think that "The Social Network" and "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" would be enough to give them the 'hacking' hint.

I just happened to watch this one over the weekend. While I think the PQ is decent for DVD, it still looks dated. I'm glad I have a way to watch this movie on digital media, but I want the blu-ray NOW!

Next year's the 20th anniversary, so maybe....???

Problem is, it's an MGM title.
They started a Chapter 11 reorganization process in 2010, and I think they're going to be among the most reserved studios out there when it comes to catalog releases.

Until another studio can acquire it simply for blu-ray release, it seems that HD streaming or broadcast will be the best option. Amazon has it in HD, I've yet to watch it that way, but I've seen parts of it broadcast in HD and it looked pretty damn nice.

This film was always a favorite of mine. I loved it when it first came out, as Angelina Jolie was still a fresh face, as were many of the other actors.
But it also had Fisher Stevens, who was an 80's icon in my mind with Short Circuit and My Science Project, speaking of which, My Science Project needs a blu-ray release too.

In addition to Hackers' having an enchanting affect among the nostalgic who recall its impact on them when it first came out, I also believe there are some truly redeeming technical qualities that will hold up well for anyone who sees it for the first time on blu-ray.
The soundtrack for example, in 5.1 should be fantastic. Also, a point worth noting as far as PQ goes, the cinematographer for this film was none other than Andrzej Sekula. You may know of his work with Tarantino in Reservoir Dogs and Pulp Fiction. I always liked the way the film was shot, and finding out later who shot it provided irrefutable validation for why I liked the visual aesthetic as much I did. So, provided the transfer isn't botched, picture quality for this blu-ray should be exceptionally good for a catalog title, just on the merits of the cinematography.

Here's to hoping a 20th anniversary blu-ray release is in the making.

Very frustrated that Amazon is selling this and Vudu only lets you rent it. The prices for these streaming movies is already too high and I'm pretty sure most of what Amazon streams in HD is 720p. They don't even both to list the quality of the audio and the video on the pages for their movies anyway. Ugh.

Even though I didn't see Hackers until around 2-3 years ago, I do have a lot of nostalgia for the '90's. I did think the film's techno soundtrack & '90's cyberpunk "vibe" was interesting, so would like to see this on Blu at some point. The DVD I did see didn't have great PQ, IIRC...
