co-ax is a sad way to hook up your HDTV...

and stores do this because it's cheaper to hook all them HDYV's up via co-ax than component...

At least Best Buy Employees aren't as dumb as Wal-Mart associates. At least at Best Buy, they attempt to answer questions instead of just ignoring you or saying "I don't know!"

Something to be said about being truthful.

In this case, it's prolly an incident of a Little Bit of Knowledge.

Or, most likly, he's following the video format war in terms of X-Box versus PS3 [just MS v Sony], and is ill-disposed towards Sony for whatever reason [the burns from UMD still hurt alot of retailers, and of course, just gaming format preference].

The HD tv's hooked up at Best Buy are hooked up with coax. they use a system that sends the signal through the coax as a digital/HD signal. The tv's use their tuners to pick up these channels. it's really no different than using an antenna to receive HD Over the air content.

putting aside whether anyone there supports H-DUD or BD, i have yet to see a single "HD" display at BB setup properly.
i did laugh when i saw this setup at one of my local BB: 1080p capable HD-DVD player, 1080p capable TV, hooked up with composite! idiots.

it's no wonder there are people who say they don't see the difference between SD and HD. IMO the single biggest reason HD isn't cathing on as fast as it could be is because the staff at these retailers are too stupid to hook anything up properly so that people CAN see the difference.

I had to educate one of my friends yesterday. He had a PS3 and a 360, but he got rid of his PS3 a while ago because it didn’t have many games. Now he only buys HD DVDs, and he thought that they would win the war. He brought up the betamax-vhs porn argument, but I pointed out that there is going to be porn on blu-ray, and I told him that wasn’t an issue like it was then because of distribution of porn (not to mention free porn) on the internet. Then I explained the difference in studio support and things like the Blockbuster decision. He had no idea. He said if that was the case that he was going to buy another PS3. We need to educate people. I did get him to trade me the “World Trade Center” blu-ray that he had for my HD DVD version of “The Hitcher”.

I dont know which best buy stores you go to but I work at best buy and I know my stuff (north fla). I understand that a lot of employees dont know and many dont care either which is unfortunate. but I have been with BB for 3yrs in HT. I only really sell the BR players and I have a ps3 myself and 20plus BR movies. and at my store all we sell are the BR players.

I read this site everyday and that was kind of frustrating to read all of these posts.

Yes they are trained to support anything but Sony. So is HHGregg, Circuit City and the rest of the lot. Why you ask? Because of profit. Toshiba TVs etc have up to 3 times the profit that a comparable Sony product has. You are told to push Toshiba, Samsung, JVC etc OVER Sony for this reason. It goes across all genres...

Ask them at any store who makes the best Digital camera 9 out of 10 will say Canon or Panasonic because of profit.

Ask them about camcorders - JVC and Panasonic over Sony

The list goes on.

How do I know? Becuase I have worked for Circuit City, HHgregg, Tweeter, Radio Shack, Wal Mart, K Mart, Sears.

Sony is the Devil in retail. So if we want Blu-ray to win we need to buy more discs and tell other people we know the truth.

at best buy they dont train to not support sony. they dont really do that much training for ht to begin with. each store is specific to the mgmt. so if the ht supervisor is a 360 fanboy then tht is how the rest of the employees sell bc that is the person who trains them for the most part. unless you have someone that just keeps up on this stuff anyway and do their own research like me.

I haven't had that probelm at Best Buy, it was really rereshing to see most the guys in the Magnolia department and even the monitor calibrator all supported Blu. Well at least the ones I dealt with. I am sure there are enough idiots out there that will mess thigns up though.
I also know that I saw a display claiming to show HD-DVD quality and movies, but it was using an XBOX 360 with add-on and was showing a DVD of Cars! ARG! Cars isn't even IN Hi Def yet! And they were claiming it was HD-DVD! It will never go there cause it's Disney!
I even heard ppl in the store yesterday lookng at the Blu/HD section say "I just don't know which one to buy cause I don't know which way the format war will go".
I wanted so much to tell him the truth, but I didn't have the time. I should have showed him the Blu light but alas, i failed.

I go there all the time...just because their aren't too many other options. They are real stupid though about their products. Asked a guy about upconversion even though I already knew the answer he was wrong. Another guy didn't even know what an HDMI cable was.

I agree. I've spoken to many sales reps from BB, CC and Tweeter (I'm in the west FL area) - not all are educated about products (agreed), however on the flip side I've spoken to many that know what they're talking about (the exceptions), one in particular comes to mind that worked in the Magnolia area was very pro Blu-ray and understood what was currently happening and what was coming down the pipline and if he didn't know something he admitted it and even offered to have me speak directly to the sony rep that happend to be in the store that day...I think the guys in the Magnolia area seem to be a couple of notches more informed than the others and of course it depends on who you speak to.

welcome to the forums, adpnightmare!
don't take anything personal. i'm sure everyone realizes that not 100% of BB staff are idiots, but in most of our experiences BB has a particular high level of ignorance when it comes to anything HD. i've only ever seen 3 stores that had HDTV displays setup correctly: Sony Store, Sears, and once at Futureshop. hell, i went into BB when first looking for BD movies, asked an employee where the blu-ray was, and got the reply "blue what?".

HD knowledge is desperatly needed in the electronics retail sector, you must admit. most consumers come thru the doors ignorant and looking for clarity, the last thing they need is to run into an equally ignorant employee (blind leading the blind). BB needs more staff like you, and as such you have the opportunity to spread the HD truth that most of us don't have.

Exactly. And the quality of the picture with that setup is likely more of a function of the quality of image at the beginning of the process and the quality of the connectors they are using than the sort of cabling being used. As noted, that's basicallly what you're doing if you are grabbing HD OTA from an attic antenna or outdoor. The coax runs directly into one of the RF inputs on the back of the set and the digital tuner in the set takes over. I'll bet my 110" boom antennna and high quality co-ax run directly into my XBR2's tuner renders as good a pic as someone else's converter box signal sent via HDMI.

In a retail store, there are a lot of variables at work, including whether they are trying to show OTA broadcasts, how many TV's they are trying to serve with a particular feed, and how they are trying to do it. Co-ax can actually carry a more robust signal over distances than HDMI. THe latter was actually designed with copy protection in mind, rather than what would be the best idea for HD cabling with distance in mind. Even with excellent specs, using HDMI for runs over 20 yards is dicey. Component does better, even though the mantra we all have memorized is that "HDMI is better than Component, which is better than S-video, which is better than ...."

The point is, depending on what the HD content is and what the set up in the store might be, co-ax maybe the best way to deliver HD

I work for Best Buy and there are some people that know what they are really talking about and then there is of course the noobs that need to get trained. I have worked at Best Buy since 2000 but me as an employee have always wanted to know more details about products that we carry and also don't carry. You really do have to be opened minded about technology since it is always evolving. I am a Blu-Ray supporter because of the exclusive studios that BD has like Sony, Disney, & Fox. Their is more CE support for Blu-Ray compared to HD-DVD (which only really has Toshiba). I also like the fact that we can have a single layer BD disc for video or data storage, or even a DL BD disc with 50GB! The sales rep at BBY at in the first post was probably a HD-DVD fanboy or a M$ fanboy either way when you told him the facts about Blu-Ray he began to rethink his stand on HD-DVD. I try to at my store to preach the word of Blu-Ray by telling them the facts of why Blu-Ray is more superior to HD-DVD.

It's not a digital signal. It's a standard coax signal split about 40 times.

That's why they look so horrible

Huh, Didn't HE (best buy associate) say that Walmart did not sell Blu-ray (Which is not true I saw some in the PS3 section about a week ago). But even if he was correct, he contradicted himself when comparing Walmart's competion to Best Buy to win favor to HD-DVD.

It's stupid, because If walmart did not carry Blu-ray, all the more reasons to buy it from Best Buy. Right? So how does Walmart not having Blu-ray suppose to help HD-DVD. Does he want to loose future sales to walmart? (they don't carry HD-DVD, at leats at Local Store I go to)

Walmart Does not Carry large amount's of Blu-rays because of HD-
DVD. when HD-DVD first came out, select walmarts stocked the launch titles only to pull them from shelves because Walmart regulars were returning them because their "DVD" player could not read them

they keep hat few Blu-ray movies they have in PS3 section because majority their regulars are dumb, and need to believe that Blu-ray can only work on PS3.

Once again, that's why when they say "Can I help you?" I immediately say "NO!"... next time I'll say, "No, but is there anything I can help you with?"

But then again.. I try not to take any advice from teenagers nowadays...
