I'm not American, but Happy Thanksgiving anyways y'all !

Would anyone care to share with this naive Brit exactly what the day entails ?

Does everyone have the day off work ? Is it similar to Xmas day in that you give presents, have a massive roast dinner etc. ?

Like in Canada, which celebrates Thanksgiving Day a month earlier, this holiday came about to give thanks for a bountiful harvest. It is thought that Turkey became a tradition , because they were easier to hunt...besides something that ugly still has to have a meaningful purpose (LOL)!

It's traditional for us to go around the table, prior to the beginning of the ceremonial Turkey carving, and individually give thanks for those things that have had some meaning to us in the past year. It could be the wealth of friendship, a new job, the arrival of a newborn...anything really.

Bascially though, we just sit around and shoot the shit with a few beers, watch some football and eat as much as we can until we bust! Then we have leftovers for a few days!

Happy Thanksgiving all!

Like THE FORCE, I wasn’t too sure what the day meant to everyone. Thanks for the explanation John! Sounds like my Christmas Day! Eat and drink.. A wonderful day with the family!

Turkey is the Christmas tradition for me, like it is for TG and we have a tv character/celeb who is a turkey! He gets a hard time in the run up to Christmas, as every year he gets playful threats from tv hosts and radio presenters that HE will be their Christmas dinner! Do you have a similar tv "celeb" who is a turkey and who HATES this time of year?!

I give you 'Dustin' - Ireland's 'most wanted' in December!

PS this turkey went on to represent Ireland in the Eurovision Song Contest (last year)!! The once respected competition (remember, it brought your Riverdance all those years ago at the half time interval!!) was sent further in to the pit of worthlessness when this happened. Our representive gets selected by the Irish public! So it was actually the people of Ireland who sent him there but all the voting was done as a kinda joke and no one actually thought he would win the public's overall vote!) A shambles..

This is his perfomance at the Eurovision..

It's a national holiday of celebration that commemorates the founding of our country. No gifts are exchanged but it's typically a day that families get together and sit down to a huge meal. The meal can vary from family to family but traditionally it consists of things like turkey (or ham), dressing, cranberry sauce, mashed potatoes, green beans (or green bean casserole), etc. People usually gorge themselves on food until they are completely stuffed!

Besides reuniting with families, other Thanksgiving traditions are watching the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, watching American football (lots of football games are played on Thanksgiving), and even some families mark Thanksgiving as the official first day of the "holiday season." Some families put their Christmas trees and decorations up on Thanksgiving.

Then of course the day after Thanksgiving is referred to as "Black Friday." Black Friday marks the first official shopping day of the holiday season. It's when all of the retail stores run special discounts on items that would otherwise be more expensive. Many people arrive at stores extremely early in the morning (and even in some cases, camp out) so they will not miss out on the discounts! It's called black friday because it's typically the day when retail stores finally start operating at a profit for the fiscal year (operating "in the black).

I hope this helps you out!

That has indeed Steelmaker mate, as my next question was going to be "What is Black Friday ?!". There's not alot of places over here that offer mega deals before Xmas. We have to wait until the January sales, where everyone goes ballistic. I think more and more peeps are accepting their Xmas presents a couple of weeks late, so they can get better deals in the sales now, and just giving the obligatory smellies & socks on Xmas day itself !

Just thought, I work in an American bank.. Would have been nice if we were off here today! Not likely.. It's quieter (workload wise) though with our American colleagues all off today so that’s something!
