Film is a visual medium. Color is what makes the visual spectrum. It's not wrong for a film to be designed with specific color construction in mind for the effect of emotionally conveying a message to the viewer.

I mean, if you take away the ability to play with color, what are you left with? Nothing. If you say a director can't use color to convey a message, what are they supposed to show you? You'd be left with blank visuals and only audio if color isn't allowed to be used.

Doesn't get any more muted than the color of Schindler's List. Is that lazy? How about Pleasantville? Sin City? The Wizard of Oz? How about the TRULY muted color of Dr. Strangelove or Ed Wood? Is that lazy, or is that effective use (or, in this case, "lack") of color?

Muted color is just as useful a tool to convey messages as overly colorful displays like we see in animated works or things like Speed Racer.

Like i said, sometimes it works and sometimes it seems lazy. I think we agree it's a subjective thing.

Tell this to the people of Barrow, Alaska this time of year. I'm sure they would love their environment brightened up a bit.

I never watched that in a movie theater, just at home and I didn't get sick from it at all. That was truly a case of the effect enhancing the movie. I never got the complaints that movie got either. If it was meant to look like some guy shot it, of course it's going to be shaky.

I'm told it is the artistic intent but whatever happend to the use of lighting to achieve this. It seem too bad that with all the high quality the new high def sets have to offer only to see it washed out by what new movies are being released today.
By that you mean the colour in Underworld which as computer tinted muted washed out colour that made everyone look like the frigging undead! LOL I’m a kinder fan of the 1 and 2 haven’t seen 3 yet.

The same cropped up in Terminated Salvation and wanted to be sick! It was my bluray copy that I took around a friends that played okay on his PS3 never liked the look of PS3 too geeky looking.

Well the colour was gross yuck looking on his Samsung 46” the blacks showed pixilation, that was real downer.

The only part in the film that looked good was when Marcus goes into Skynet and the colours came alive, wow what a waste of time watching it.

I’d sooner watch The Wizard Of Oz 50 times!

Anyway the sodden bluray wouldn’t play on my Philips BDP3000 as you might have read around the film has menu issues, I took it back I don’t really care much for it now, no thanks to Sony, they can keep, I don’t care for the new firmware updates when available!

It’s all about first impressions and Sony fails epic!

Yes that is fail on my list! I have the region 2 DVD and no way, no sodden way am I buying that film again! The camera digital photography YUCK! also the camera shaking around.

35mm has smoother motion feel to it, but digital like, Miami Vice, Collateral, both I have on DVD YUCK!

Only thing good is the sound! And I’m not touch the Bluray for this HD quality, it would only amplify the loudness of the image, no thanks. Oh, same goes with Public Enemies, I have that on DVD and he’s only gone and used Panavison Genesis for third time, sigh.

I’m done with watch Michael Mann films now in digital, YUCK!

Heat 35mm rules!
The Last of the Mohicans 35mm rules!

He can keep his digital Panavison Genesis!
I think it was used in few shots on The X-Files I want to Believe, which I have on DVD I’m stepping one foot at time with Bluray, I’ll only touch a few because this is just waste of money.

Yes we all know it has some advantage for filming at night-time. Oh really. Its far from being perfect its jerky, it looks like one of those cheap Eastenders shows on the BBC!

No, I dislike Panavison Genesis!

The Wizard Of Oz is classic and its does well with telling the story as know that one moment of silence after the house lands! Its stillness and when Dorothy, opened the door I still get Goosebumps. Wow that is powerful cinematic moment, because it comes as surprise.

And it also worked towards the end.

There’s no place like home.

Schindler's List now that was artistic approach in filmmaking, because WWII wasn’t really a nice time, to be in, nor was the systematic killing of Jews, 6million.

Its use of the red coat on the little girl running though the streets, well that’s heartbreaking, when you notice later on in the film.

Also the lighting of candle and when the film neared the end it all goes to colour, because world war II wasn’t really a colourful time to live in, it was bleak filled with death and destruction, so the use of B&W served the story in powerful way.

That was the point I was trying to make. Lack of strong color gives a strong contrast when/if color does appear. Someone mentioned Terminator Salvation, but I love the way it's so dark and dingy all along until they show the inside. It's so right.

And what’s more wouldn’t there be a lot of radioactive and everyone is running around without radiation suits and radiation is suppose to last decades. Plus they have white teeth so where are they getting the toothpaste from?
