Thumbs up

I borrowed the DVD version and watched it last night. I liked it, but agree with reviewers that the story length is a bit bloated and could have been shorter to tighten up the flow. I would recommend this TV miniseries only to fans of Alice in Wonderland and other quirky surrealist fantasy only. Others will not enjoy.

I would think that if you are into films like Speed Racer, Willy Wonka/Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, N. Gaiman's Neverwhere, or Terry Gilliam films like The Adventures of Baron Munchausen, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus, you will have some appreciation for Alice. Even at its 3-hour length, I think I will watch it again some time, probably on a blu-ray on sale. I'd snatch this up in a minute if it went on sale for $10. Anything above $20 I think would be too much.

P.S. (a week later)
This film is growing on me the more I think back on it. I listend to the entire audio commentary with the writer/director and Alice actress Scorsone. Very engaging and demonstrated how much careful thought and planning went into this production. Even if not all of the writer's intentions came across as clearly as they were in his mind, I appreciate that he actually put a great deal of intellectual work into this script. Same goes for the actors, who seem to have had a high level of commitment and cameraderie on this production. Maybe I will pick it up it comes down to around $20 on BD!
