I saw two films this year in 3D: "Up" and "Avatar." I thought they were both very visually impressive, and very glad I saw them this way, but I would only watch 3D in an actual theater. Besides, I still think the glasses somehow take away some of the clarity of many scenes. "Up" on Blu-ray is still more impressive in 2D (colors and clarity) than when I saw it in 3D.

I did a poll on AVS forum about the future of home 3D. That is the next big thing. The HDMI's next standard will allow for all these 3D ready TVs they have been selling to be compatible with the 3D Blu-ray systems that are supposed to come out this year. The cash cows of HD TVs and Blu-Ray players as well as Blu-Ray disks is not what it was so the industry is going to go big time into pushing expensive new systems. Avatar is the hook, line and sinker to get people to want the 3D as well as other offerings such as that last Hanna Montana 3D concert. The new system is supposed to be just as good as what is being seen in the theaters. I don't know about all that, and doubt I will be updating my equipment anytime soon unless it dies.

If I want to see 3D I'll watch it in the theater. It's just not a home experience for me. What's next? Everything in 3D? Am I going to be watching Monday night football in 3D? The World Series? Come on... It will be a niche of the TV industry, that's for sure.

If the new 3D format is a good improvement over the present colored glasses, then I'm all in. I have tried to watch the current 3D releases and the colored glasses just don't work well enough ! ! ! They actually give me a headache ! BUT, there are some movies that I would love to see in a well done 3D format .

3D should never become mainstream it would be a travesty if that happens. Watching all movies like that would just be insane. And will make everybody go blind or color blind. this 3D crap is getting overboard.

I would have voted for "It depends".
It is nice to have 3D as an "event" but not for frequent viewing. It is good in the theatre, but I don't want to put on 3D glasses to watch TV at home. I enjoyed the 3D effect in "Up" and "Monsters vs. Aliens". I found it mildly annoying with "A Christmas Carol". I found it very annoying with the trailer for "Alice in Wonderland". For "Avatar", the great CGI effects were weighed down by the quality, or lack thereof, of the underlying movie. Even then, I was more impressed with the CGI than the 3D. |

People think that 3D HAS TO BE those red/blue lens glasses. That simply is not true. The new 3D glasses used in theatres are clear lenses that make the world seem exactly as normal when looking through them without a 3D video in front of you. THAT is the 3D of the future that is being implemented within the upcoming years. The 3D presentations in theatres for the last 5 or 6 years have used this new technique and it is far superior a presentation with nowhere near the "headache" effect that everyone describes. Makes me wonder how many people complaining about headaches from 3D theatrical presentations are just blowing smoke to persuade the masses when they haven't even bothered to see a 3D film since the latest advancement in technology. |

If its anaglyph 3D or 2D then 2D all the way. When I want to show Coraline to someone Id rather have the beautiful color and clarity of the 2D version over the mutted colors, heavy ghosting, and low detail of the 2D version.
However Im sure the upcoming 3D Full HD will be the future and be by far the best way to view movies at home. Full Color 3D all the way. |

And the great thing about Blu-ray's 3D is that anyone stuck in the past can still enjoy the traditional "2D" look. And it's all on the software end, so we ultimately just need to have the hardware come eventually. People talk a lot about how they hate glasses, but that's a hardware question. Don't pay Blu-ray any mind, throw your complaints at the hardware manufacturers. Quote:
Yeah, that sounds fine to me, assuming that's what the creative team wants. Film everything in widescreen stereoscopic 3D with surround sound. If you don't like audio, mute it. If you don't like color, adjust your settings to sap out the color. If you don't like widescreen, get chopped-up "fullscreen" DVDs. If you don't like surround sound, downmix to stereo or mono (or don't even buy a sound system!). If you don't like stereoscopic 3D, just watch the one sided view. It's exactly the same on your end, all telling them to NOT use 3D does is stop people who want it from being able to enjoy it. There is no problem with them creating the art to a higher technical standard. If you don't like it, don't worry about it. Don't like the fact that The Dark Knight has scenes shot on IMAX film? Fine. Don't go to an IMAX theater and you won't notice the additional resolution and picture quality. But don't try to tell them NOT to make movies with these technical advances. Just because a person doesn't like color or audio or ANYTHING, that doesn't give them a right to tell filmmakers to not use all of the tools in their toolbox. I look forward to the day when comedies or dramas are filmed in 3D, even if I won't end up watching them in 3D in my home. ps if you guys get headaches or if your eyes hurt from seeing 3D, try focusing specifically on the part of the picture in focus. The optical illusion of the stereoscopic depth can mess with your head if you try to look at part of the picture which is not in focus. If there is a character in the foreground and he is sharply resolved and the background is in the distance and blurry, DON'T FOCUS ON THE BACKGROUND. Your eyes will naturally attempt to bring it into focus, but they can't, because the depth is only an illusion. This can cause eyestrain and headaches. Just follow the lens's direction for what to look at. |
