I agree it looks amazing but how long would it be before people get tired of it?

RealD 3D (the polarized glasses we use in theaters) requires two images be projected onto the screen, since currently 1080p HDTVs project only one image onto the screen we're stuck with the two-color glasses until HDTV's that project two images are introduced in the near future.

3D is just a stupid gimmick.. Why should I need some pair of uncomfortable, distracting glasses to be able to enjoy a movie?

I saw Avatar in 3D and it was amazing and spectacular (loved the movie). I will jump on the 3D bandwagon and even buy a 3D TV (looking to buy a new TV this year), but under one condition and that is that I have the option in watching anything in non-3D if I choose to do so. I don't want to buy a 3D TV and the only way to use it is that I must use 3D glasses if so then I'm not buying it.

Do like Cameron did and have contact lenses made.

I thought Avatar was cool, but I also walked out thinking it would look just as cool in 2D. I saw Up in 3D, and actually think it looks better in 2D on Blu-ray: sharper and more vibrant colors. I don't intend to watch movies at home in 3D.

No! because you don't have to put any devices on your ears to enjoy surround sound. What movies are people expecting to be on 3D?

The 3-D glasses that you get from the theaters will not probably work on your 3-D movie at home. Most of the time (all the time for me), the 3-D movie will come with glasses that supports the 3-D. Some glasses are green and red where as others are blue and red in color.

For the new tech the same glasses you use at the theater will work at home. No more red and blue glasses.

I agree with the fad/gimick standpoint. Like someone said, 3D comes around every 5 or 10 years gets some ink for a two or three years and then is gone again.

I read a very good article a few months ago (no link sorry) but it said that even with this new version of lenses and filming, all the problems of 3D will always be there which is why it won't be permanent. Those being that no matter how they do it, to look 3D they force your eyes to see in a way they aren't meant to. enough of the population will still get headaches, or eye strain or nausa because of it.

and what about people like me that wear glasses? it's really awkward to wear some stupid plastic set of junk over or under my glasses. No, contacts or laser surgery isn't an option for everyone. I shouldn't have to conform or spend more money to do what everyone else can do. I buy glasses thats enough.

if 3D goes constant and mainstream in all tv and movies we are going to see a very fast, very big decline in vision of the average human.

This. There is nothing more awkward than wearing something OVER your glasses. It is incredibly unfomfortable, and extremely distracting. If I were to watch Avatar, I'd be watching my own glasses more than the movie it's self...

Like I said earlier in the thread, the box office figures disagree (75% of Avatar's gross is from 3d screenings). And we all know that money talks. Don't expect this "fad" to be going away. Just about every theater is equipped to project digital 3d these days so its not a small niche like IMAX. The cost of shooting 3d will go down, filmmakers will grow more comfortable with it, and I suspect that you'll start seeing these films all over the place.

Question about 3D in general...

3D movies cost more to see, correct? Almost positive the last 3D movie i saw was like 3 dollars more per ticket.... Ok...If i bring my own 3D glasses to the theatre, are they still going to charge me more??

I have to disagree with you.... I think 3D will die down again.... you realize that Avatar had roughly 150 million in marketing!!! That is why this film is so succesful... Your typical movie will not have this kind of funding and wont have the type of "buzz" that Avatar has

I just don't get how 3D works. I bought the Monsters vs Aliens 3D bluray and put the glasses on and didn't notice anything. It looks way better without the glasses. I didn't find a 3D option in the menu anywhere, is there a special way to view this or what?
