personlly i hate to say it, but if you use those goodies a lot i would say its worth it. 90% of the time when i watch movies its not at at time i can really crank the audio and take advantage of lossless audio. But i stream TV shows and movies from netflix daily. just depends on your preferences. But wait, do you already have a player that uses 5.1 analog? if so why not just use both? one when you want lossless, and the other when you want goodies.

Is there a big difference between Lossless audio and 5.1 or 1080p and 720p? NOPE

First of all let me say I've decided to upgrade my receiver first, I just need one that is compatible with my 6-ohm speakers. I'll upgrade the player later.

What are internal amps?

What are matching amps?

So confused....

Thanks for all the suggestions so far, guys. My receiver is ~ 10 years old and, while serviceable, I'm looking forward to an upgrade.

Yamaha is still a good brand to go with if you're running 6 ohm speakers. I have 6 ohm speakers all around, and I use a Yamaha HTR-6080 (RX-V861). The comparable model to mine in Yamaha's lineup today is the HTR-6280 (RX-V1065). It sounds very musical, and has a better power supply and amplification section than the RX-V465 or RX-V665.

Either the RX-V665 or RX-V1065 would suit your needs well. Here's the RX-V1065 (HTR-6280):

I don't have an HD receiver yet... just watching Blu Rays at 1080i with DD or DTS. DTS definitely sounds better... I can tell the difference. (I believe DTS has more content than DD?) Can't wait until I can get a better receiver.

You mean Lossless and lossy audio. "5.1 channels" has nothing to do with the actual core codec. With this type of mental paradigm, you should have stayed with DVD, especially when you are telling someone who is planning on purchasing something inferior. When you buy new, you buy the latest technology. That technology is 1080p, and lossless. It's all about building the actual theater experience, and compressed crap does not do it too well. OP- I would urge you to get a lossless receiver, and worry finding something additional to use with it with the extra bells and whistles later.

DTS - 1.5 Mbp/s
DD (most) - 480Kbp/s (DVD) or 640 Kbp/s (Blu-ray)

To the OP:

Lossless - 3Mb-9Mbp/s

DTS is great...but not for anything too dynamic. Definitely a step up from DD.

Interesting.

The shocker came when we compared the lower 448 kbps Dolby Digital DVD bitrate to the original. There was an audible difference, but it was only ever-so-slightly noticeable (and this is with a high end audio system in an acoustically controlled environment that is so far beyond what typical home theater systems are capable of resolving). There was just the slightest decrease in presence with the DD version, not exactly a softening of the sound, but just a tad less ambience and a similarly small tightening of the front soundstage’s depth. Quite a remarkable result, I thought, and I was highly impressed with how much fidelity can be packed into such a relatively small amount of bitspace.
Funny, how some people with average equipment can notice such a difference. :P

DTS on DVD is usually encoded around 754Kbps. Dolby and DTS use different types of encoding and there is no direct one to one relationship between the lossy DD and DTS.

To the OP:

Might I suggest you do a blind listening test. Do you have someone who can alternate between lossy and lossless for you? That way you can do a personal test as to whether you hear a big difference or not. Pick your favorite flics and scenes and let the fun begin. Have that person record what you determine as lossy or lossless. You may need to adjust the volume per track though. As sometimes the dialnorm is off on different encodes. Such as DD vs DTS.

I think Action flics are the best to test this with as well, since they seem to have more sound in general then most other flics. Therefore they tend to lose the most when going from lossless to lossy.

am i missing something here? you'll lose analog inputs with the Yamaha rxv-465, but with hdmi the receiver can decode lossless audio for you...

OOPs you mean you're thinking of switching BD players... should probally find away to switch receivers first around same budget as player, then the player next

I am still stuck in DVD world when it comes to audio. My receiver can be used for multichannel outputs for audio (but I do not have a blu ray player with that feature). I'm planning on getting the Oppo BDP-80 mainly for the subtitle placement feature (for foreign films) since I own a Constant image height screen and anamorphic lens and for the multichannel outputs.

Just trying to see who, if anyone, actually listens to the regular, core 5.1 tracks.

I expect there's a ridiculous difference.
You can test this yourself. Simply hook up an optical cable from your S550, set the audio output priority to digital SPDIF, and see whether you can tell the difference.

The DTS core and companion DD 5.1 tracks on BD are encoded at higher bitrates than you get on DVD and they sound great.
