the hurt locker was just fair movie no where near the quality of avatar. When I hear people saying hurt locker for best picture oscar I loose all respect for them. Same as saying best movie of 2009 was moon You got to be joking. Mind you too I am looking at the entertainment factor not the art content.

The importance of READING the thread is listed below:

Last year's Best Director nominees: Slumdog Millionaire, Benjamin Button, Frost/Nixon, Milk, The Reader

For the last 15 years, at least 4 of the Best Picture/Best Director nominees have been the same, and in many cases it was all 5. The exceptions tend to be when a foreign film gets worked into one of the categories (like Le scaphandre et le papillon, two years ago).

Now with 10 nominees, if you think it deserved a Best Director nom, then it stands to reason that it'd easily get thrown into Best Picture as well.

And many people think that the field of 10 can easily be narrowed down to the "real 5", by looking at the ones that also had nominations for directing (meaning An Education, The Blind Side, District 9, A Serious Man, and Up have no chance of winning).

Exactly: The plot, if there is one for us to follow, is the suspense of our following Sgt. Sanborn thinking "At what point is this psychotic adrenaline-surfer nut going to get us blown up in the worst way possible?"
Later it switches to James as he's trying to find out what happened to Annoying Kid--We don't really know why he's barging into the private house, and by that point in his slow descent, he realizes he's not really sure why either.

Character studies still have plots, otherwise there's not much to learn about the character, and it ends up being a pointless movie. Oh wait...
So...guess it's not pointless, then?
(Didn't say it was "great", although it's pretty darn good--Just wanted to smart-snub the kiddies saying "Huh?...My brain hurts trying to find the plot, I hated it!")

It was a decent movie. I can see why it has the buzz going for it. It wasn't my favorite movie from last year (Up still holds that spot). However, I don't think it deserves the Best Picture win. Inglourious Basterds or Up are more deserving. I would place Avatar slightly above this due to Avatar's visuals.

I saw it before the buzz got out of hand my expectations were at a reasonable level. Had I seen it in late December I probably would have been disappointed. As it is, I like the movie, but I had some serious problems with both the story and the way the movie was made--bouts of inconsistent reality (i.e. sniping scene) and some "everyone yell/shaky camera/quit cuts" manufactured tension. Good, solid movie but not Great IMO. Once is enough for me.

I'm guessing he thinks it's better than the $12 million it made at the box office.

It's at least a $15 million grosser.

Way overrated. I enjoyed Up in the Air and Inglorious Basterds a lot more than THL. That sniper scene was also completely ridiculous.

That's not enough to even break even though.

It only cracked $4 million outside of the U.S. ouch...

One would assume that if the Oscars are a celebration of movies that make Hollywood look good, that they'd at least pick the one's that even remotely made money.

Then again, you know what they say, an Academy Award and $3 still only buys you a coffee from Starbucks.

It was a great film, one of the best of the year. I am not buying that argument about "realism" for one second.

It's one of my best blind buys, and it's the type of movie that can be watched over and over again for me.

Why not?

The only folks that I've seen even remotely claim that it was realistic are the folks who have never even seen military training {even on TV} and certainly not from the people who have actually experienced anything overseas.

For those arguing the realism aspect, here's an article from the military consultant on the film:

Yup this covers it:

Quote:
Were we as reckless as James? Hell no. I probably would have punched him out as well. The "beyond the wire" insurgent hunt and hoodie run, may not be entirely realistic, but no one can honestly say they weren't entertained and glued to their seats during these sequences
"glued to their seats" and 'realistic' are once again proven to be two entirely different things.

I think that's why I love the movie so much. It's not how real or how story driven it is, it's how it just keeps this sense of tension throughout the film. Like the sniper scene, I know it's unrealistic but you get this feeling that they could be shot at any second.
