By far the best instrumental band is Toe - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xvcFFPQijqk
Some others I like are :

Unwed Sailor - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qVqstg7OpiM
By The End of Tonight - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IvUStkX618E
Lightning Bolt - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3fXUcL9FiJU
Hella - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jdMDcG3zAEI
Maserati - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Te5LN8YtyU
Mouse On The Keys - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4kYY8iMxZKs
Neil On Impression - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qIkbuHcJhmY
Sharks Keep Moving (half their songs) - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hqakZ2ub5BQ
The Redneck Manifesto - http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RGpYz33Wyw0

Most of these bands are 100% instrumental.
Toe has a few songs with vocals, as does Sharks Keep Moving.

Do yourself a favor and at least watch a few moments of each video! You won't be disappointed!

What no King Crimson yet!

The Larks Tongue In Aspic series is excellent, not to mention Red, Discipline, The Sheltering Sky, VROOOM, Level 5... Ok, I could go on and on.

Oh how about 80% of Apocalyptica's material. If you haven't heard of them they started out as a 4 piece cello instrumental band from Finland covering Metallica songs. Since then they have covered many bands (Faith No More, Sepultura, Pantera, Slayer and David Bowie to name a few) as well as released many original tracks.

When my wife and I got married almost 2 years ago, most of our song selection for the ceremony was from Apocalyptica including songs like: Unforgiven, Nothing Else Matters, Fade to Black and One. We also used a cello piece of Zeppelin's Stairway To Heaven as she came down the aisle.

Check out their songs Hall of the Mountain King and Harmageddon for a nice idea of their music.

That's pretty cool. We had the intro to Stairway playing for our candle-lighting ceremony up at the altar (the original LZ version, though).

Nice, Stairway is a great song for weddings. Ours was a pure Rock n Roll wedding, heavy music, black & red everywhere, barbwire and skulls. Our cake topper was even a bride and groom skeleton. It was a kick ass party but I think my grandma almost had a heart attack!

Who could ever forget that Stairway To Heaven's intro sounded very similarly to that song? Spirit was a huge influence from the band.

I agree. Apocalyptica can make some very good cover material. I've been listening to some of their cover for Metallica songs and they have been doing a great job with it.

Here is another classic.

Does anybody remember the GREAT opening theme for the CBS Sports Spectacular TV show in the Mid-1970s done by Electric Light Orchestra?

Love the powerful drums in it along with the acoustic guitar.
