If anyone is forcing anything it is M$. They still have systems on the market with the "Red Ring Of Death", and allow these to be sold to consumers. They even state the reason they send out a refurbished system is that the new ones will cause the same problem? Not to mention if you own a PC they will stop supporting Windows XP by January and then you will "have" to buy Vistas, which I know people at work who bought it and said it was crap. To top it all off Halo3 will be a two disc game due to space limitations. We won't ever have to worry about that BS.

Oh man! Even Blu-ray's not enough!!! Looks like they needed to "force" something bigger on us.

Oh well, I'm sure when the Terabyte disc comes out with the PS4, the 360 will start using HD DVD technology.

Take it easy,

yeah but to read 200gb you would need a special blu ray player that could read through 8 layers which the current ones do not. furthermore the more layers you achieve the higher probability of failure that incurs. so thats why sony is using 50 gb max for this system. who knows maybe 5 years from now when the failure rate is extremely low and theyve perfected it, then it will come out for consumers to use for data backup and what not. it would probably take you a whole day to burn one disc. **** that.

If I'm a make a prediction here: I think the PS4 will be BD-based like the PS3, but with a special laser allowing for up to 6-layers to be read. Individual games will be from 1 layer up to 6 depending on what's needed.

We'll see what actually happens, but my guess's as good as any.

I dont even think they have had time to master the full features that single blu-ray disks offer ... PS4 lol... I think the ps3 age starts when we see killzone mgs4 ... ps4 999$ and for 1200$ you can buy a transforming version that when you need a drink will walk to the fridge and get it

But would said 200 Gig BD work in a PS3? Wouldn't it need some kind of physical upgrade?
I know the PS3 games will have more storage than 360, but how much does a 360 have since they aren't using HD-DVDs for the games?

I don't believe a 200GB BD would work in a PS3. I think it might be possible to read a 100GB BD (4 layers) with a firmware update, but I doubt this will happen.

X360 uses DVD9s, which is 8.5GB of storage space.

Its obvious MS has a plan for this problem so it will be interesting to see how ccreative studios can get with getting in under the cap of one DVD. It also sucks developers arent able to be assured that every 360 owner has a harddrive so they cant just assume that either without screwing over their own customers (again). It amazing how many more things the 360 wont be ready for in the next 6-7 years of this generation.

PS3 will just use multiple discs. I have a feeling MGS4 graphics and content will be one of the biggest on the PS3 period though.

Microsoft just recently announced the addition of the "HD Required" tag to appear on the back of 360 games.

Basically, the core system will be obsolete very very soon.

The core system never should have existed in the first place IMHO. People said Sony should have released both a DVD and a Blu-ray version of the PS3...and this shows exactly why that's such an awful idea.

people that put down the PS3 are just pissed cuz they are stuck with a 360 s***box. the Playstation 3 is much more than a blu-ray player and a gaming system. it is the complete entertainment hub

Default yawn, another 360 variant?

http://www.hdtvuk.tv/2007/08/new_xbox_ultima.html

Why? Are they purposefully trying to confuse their own market? I realise there are a couple of PS3 variants, at least in terms of hard drive size, but this will be the 5th distinct console since launch if the rumour is true.

Give it up MS, just concentrate on rescuing the sales that you are losing to Nintendo and Sony. Adding another console won't help.

You think games are big now, wait two years. That's what Sony was thinking.

That's just a rumor. HD-DVD is practically dead now and MS forever missed that boat when they didn't include HD-DVD right from the beginning for the 360.

This is a interesting thread, here is my take:

I think right now the 360 is a very capable next-gen system. The games look great and play smooth and Live is superior to the Playstation network.

BUT, in a number of years, as developers continue to use new tools and continue to push the size and quality of games, I think we will see the PS3 pull away from the 360. The 360 will show MS lack of foresight in not going with HD-DVD and they will be forced to release a new system using HD-DVD drive (backward compatible of course).

The PS3 will be future-proof for a long time and just like the ps2 each year games will get smoother and more beautiful.

And regardless of who the winner of the format wars is, the PS3 dev kits are in all the developers hands and BD will be used for the PS3 until it is replaced by the next playstation (hopefuly a decade or more). So don't stress about it.
