On a side note, does anyone know who owns the rights to Ashes of Time Redux for North America? I have been waiting forever for a release here. :/

It's Sony. They released it on DVD only, so it seems like they passed on doing a BD.

I was quite shocked after seeing the "Trailer Comparison"! The Trailer looks much better! Is the difference the same with "Fallen Angels"?

Do you really think so? The left picture is from the trailer and the right one's from the actual movie. You probably have to see it in motion to see the full difference.

Well, the trailer for Fallen Angels is much too dark, watch it here.

I got Chungking Express and Ashes of Time which iare also stunning. Imported Days of Being Wild and As Tears Go By from DDDHouse sale. I'll update the thread as it's reported as being over but just checked and they're both still HK$150. Not as good quality as the others but great upgrade on the DVD.

Hey,

yes I chanced my mind a little after checking out the comparison for the "old" and "new" version here: http://wong-kar-wais-love-odysseys.b...997-today.html

The skintones of the Feature Film (in the "Trailer Comparison") seem to match the changes WKW did for the new version! I guess the Beaver Review/Comparison will be really interesting on this one...

By the way: Really great Blog on WKW! Nice to someone that ethusiastic on a Director sharing its knowledge! Great Tanks for that!

Ashes of Time blu-ray is region free btw. Just looked at the back cover and it clearly says regions A,B,C. I noticed that it's missing from a few collections. Good price on Amazon uk. It's an incredible film. Only single layered disc btw.

Ashes of Time Redux is region free but the extras are PAL. The special features play on my Sherwood but not on my PS3.

Yes, the color scheme of the two newly DVDs that contain the new version and the BD match!

What is yout take on the difference between the trailer and feature picture? Do you think missing "grain" is a choice by the director (by doing the new version of the movie) or was it filtered to get more of a "HD Apeal"?

Personally, I think they didn't filter any grain from the movie. I guess they would have filtered it from the trailer then too.
Looking at the trailers for Fallen Angels und Chungking Express, they both look inferior compared to the HD transfers of the actual movies. I think the look of Happy Together is fine and there is still enough grain there. One thing I'm not sure of is Fallen Angels, though. It sometimes looks as if there was some DNR applied, but I'm really not sure... But I wouldn't worry about Happy Together.
I'll probably post some more pictures for the trailer / actual movie comparison on my blog later.

And please remember that these are only guesses by a fan of WKW who owns many discs of his movies and who has compared them... I have only seen two of his movies in the cinema so far. Shame on me!

Big Thanks for that! This makes it much clearer that the feature locks better in total.
But if you look at those 2 pictures: http://i42.tinypic.com/2hwfnmh.jpg & http://i45.tinypic.com/20g16bt.jpg you see that the feature loses a lot grain, eventhough no detail. I personaly like grain, so I hope getting rid of it was a choice made by WKW and not one made by "Kino".
I do not know enough about picture processing, so mabe someone else knows if losing the grain structure is inevitable when "brightening" up the picture?

It's also possible they didn't remove any grain - and the grainy structure of the trailer was caused by its source material (that would also explain the bad contrast). The movie still has a grainy structure (it's rather hard to see it on a single frame) which looks wonderful.

I also wanted to post the link to the Beaver comparison

Meanwhile I ordered both (Fallen Angels & Happy Together). I'm really looking forward to see them. By the way: isn't it funny that "Kino" did such a good job on these BDs and their DVDs still are little defective (see Beaver-Comparison).

So we need 2046 and "In the Mood for Love" and everything is fine
