Proponents of both formats like to tout their numbers in comparison to their rival, but what is often lost in the hyperbole is that neither format comes even close to a fraction of standard DVD sales while costing them a lot more to format and manufacture. The best selling high def discs would be considered an abysmal failure by standard DVD sales standards.

While sales of HDM are just a fraction of DVD, you don't make business decision based on what is happening today. DVD sales are slowly sliding as the format matures, and the studios are running out of films to release. This is why we are seeing television shows released on DVD, they fill in the gap where movie sales used to. The studios as well as the CE manufacturers need a new cash cow. DVD prices have dropped to a point where the margin of profit is very small, and that goes for DVD players as well.

Just like with the release of DVD, the studios have to start from the bottom and work their way up again. With this format war raging, it is going to take alot longer to push any HD format on the public. We need one format, and we need it asap. This has already been established when we endured the DIVX vs DVD era. Once everyone rallied around one format, it took off. The same goes for the HD DVD vs Blu-ray.

That's funny; the first 2 Shrek's exist in hi-def. I've seen them on TV.

Their master copy is well over 1080, that still doesn't mean they'll release it on disc though.

People thought the same thing about DVD's when they were just released.

I firmly believe that within 2 years, an iPod/PSP standard def version will be included on many BDs that will be able to be unlocked like the HD Terminator 2 on the Extreme Edition.

The biggest hard drive currently made can hold 20 BD50s, and costs $300

So you're talking basically, about spending almost as much as you paid for the disc to store it on your computer.

Several times after BEING ANNOUNCED titles were pulled and then re-instated later (e.g. Lost)

So, I'm not quite sure how a DVD sheet not having Blu-ray consitutes any real indication of plans.

Wouldn't Fox want to make a big deal out of their return?
