The original collector's edition has paper disc holders where you drop the disc down into the opening. Lots of people didn't like that set-up, especially since they weren't Blu-ray case sized. You pretty much had to stick your fingers in to pull the discs out.

On the other hand, if you're willing to cut the case for season 1, you can get the original box and the new, shelf friendly cases by mailing in to Universal.

As for the series, I have a hard time thinking of a blind-buy at $150. I would rent the mini-series, and see if you get into it. If you are, and you're still not certain, the first episode of season 1, "33", should sway you to grab the set; if you're not into it at that point, don't worry about buying! But if you decide to blind buy, if you don't like it, you should still be able to sell for a healthy price.

yes absolutely.

plus u can cut the flap from season1 cardboard and tell universal to send you replacement cases!!! the downside is that u have to buy the plan separately. if u can figure all that out, great!

the plan is NOT essential viewing to the series actually =P. i feel it's quite optional unless you really want to know what's going w/the cylons during s1&s2.

What are the differences?
I recommend looking through the threads on the UK and US threads respectively to see the difference in pakaging:

UK: https://forum.blu-ray.com/united-kin...s-uk-bd-5.html

US: https://forum.blu-ray.com/blu-ray-mo...-april-12.html

The UK design is simply nicer IMO (esp when you turn it around from the advertised studio pic so that it has Adama, Six and Roslin on the front). I also think it may be cheaper than the US one? There is no difference in disc contents and they are both region free, the only difference is that the new US packaging contains the tv movie The Plan which followed the main series. This means that people with the UK box will have to get The Plan separately if they want the 'Complete' series. But the UK box is sufficiently nicer enough to warrant this for me.

The UK box contains standard BD cases (of UK size) inside the box, whereas the US one contains foldout digibook type things for the discs. I don't really care about disc containers (providing they aren't damaging) but some people prefer one over the other.
