I'd suggest Layer Cake as well; however, it does have a couple graphic scenes and nudity so if your friends might bring one of their kids over you might want to take a rain check on that...

Anyways, here is some recommendations if you want to show a movie that most of your friends probably haven't heard of or seen:

400 Blows
The Seventh Seal
The Third Man
Wages of Fear
Planet of the Apes (1968)
Reservoir Dogs (strong violence and language)
Oldboy (strong violence and language)

Nice suggestions, although I haven't seen Oldboy yet. Out of those you listed, I'd pick The Third Man or 400 Blows. The Third Man is just an excellent thriller with great black and white cinematography. 400 Blows is one of the top 25 movies of all-time and the best film ever about childhood.

I think any of those would be great starts. All are on Blu-ray and you can pick them up anywhere.

Oh, more suggestions:

Dr. Strangelove
The Machinist
Tell No One

Also all available on Blu-ray.

The Orphanage is an excellent suggestion. Don't let the seemingly cliche title or story throw you off--the film is MUCH different than you'd expect and is more of a supernatural drama than a horror film.

Oldboy is really good but its part of a trilogy and its not the 1st one. It would probably be OK as a standalone movie though.

The Lives of Others was a great flick, and Amelie is one of my all time favorites. Haven't seen Tell No One, it looks like a good one!

I cannot recommend this enough....FROM HELL with Johnny Depp. Most people haven't seen this and it is a great film! It's about "Jack The Ripper" so it's a period piece. Awesome movie though!

Gangster No 1 or Primer.

Both great movies and fairly less seen than most others.

Possibly The Hurt Locker?

Hear me out, It could be a good way to kick off your club, as there would be plenty of things to talk about, including it's recent Oscar success. It's not really a blockbuster... in a way....
Plus it looks and sounds great!

Great flick but I know a number of people have seen it unfortunately. Great suggestion though!

The "Vengence" Trilogy can be watched in any order as their stories are not connected, they are three films w/ revenge as a central theme (much like Argento's "Animals" trilogy, The Bird w/ The Crystal Plumage, Cat of Nine Tails, and 4 Flies on Grey Velvet, or Edgar Wright's unfinished "Blood & Ice Cream" trilogy featuring Shaun of The Dead and Hot Fuzz).

As for a couple suggestions, the aforementioned Shaun of The Dead, and Hot Fuzz might be a few outside-the-box choices, and if you get a chance to host again around Halloween time, give Trick 'r Treat a try.

Can't ever go wrong with 8 1/2, it's on Criterion Blu-Ray and looks wonderful. There will be no shortage of things to discuss when it's over.

That makes sense thanks. I haven't seen enough of the other two to know that they aren't connected, I am waiting to get the other two on Blu before I watch them. After I saw Oldboy, I found out it was the middle movie in a trilogy and thought I messed up seeing it first I just didn't want that to happen to others.
