It really is, the dvd looks like a disaster in comparison.

Make sure you get the five disc set, it can be had quite cheaply found improting it from the uk and is well worth the extra cut as you get four different version of the film all in hd quality.

The 5-disc Complete Collector's Edition is currently $31AU shipped from Amazon US at the moment. I got this back in the middle of last year when it was around the $18 US mark, but I'm pretty sure that at the moment with exchange rates this is about the same price. $31AU for the five disc set is a bargain when JB still wants $85 for it!

If anyone's a fan of the film you'd be crazy not to get the set while it's this price.

While I adore anything Kubrick, I have to say that the AQ on the Shining left a lot to be desired. Picture is excellent, but I found the Audio a tad muted and not that much of a step up from the DVD.

Okay, my 10 must buy Blu's mmmmmmmm....
I love action movies, so I know that I will probably draw a few groans from the movie purists, but here goes:-

1. Avatar - This is true reference quality PQ & AQ

2. Casino Royale - Everyone's favourite Bond

3. Hot Fuzz - Possibly my fave movie

4. Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl - Depp is brilliant

5. Cars - Superb PQ, and a fun movie for all ages

6. Star Trek - Make it so

7. The Dark Knight - The best Batman so far IMHO

8. Transformers - Megan Fox ('nuff said)

9. Inglourious Basterds - How the war really ended

10. No Country For Old Men - Heads or Tails!

What! thats 10 already, but I still have to add in no particular order District 9, 300, The Incredible Hulk, Transformers 2, Quantum of Solace, Die Hard 4.0, The Fifth Element (Remastered), Blade Runner (5-Disc Set), Wall E, Ratatouille, Up, Monster's Inc, Hellboy II, Mission Impossible III, Close Encounters, The Bourne Trilogy, Fight Club, The Shawshank Redemption, Iron Man, Terminator Salvation, Braveheart, Kingdom of Heaven etc. etc....

Good idea for a thread.

Just quickly looking through my collection, here's a first draft of my top 10:

Avatar
The Dark Knight
The Incredible Hulk
Transformers
Terminator Salvation
Transformers 2: Revenge of the Fallen
Die Hard 4.0
Star Trek
Jumper
2012

Honourable mentions: Bourne franchise, Matrix franchise, Casino Royale

As is obvious, I'm as much about special effects and heavy-on-the-bass explosions as I am a decent plot or good actors (which is why movies like Transformers 2 are on my list atall). Frankly, I don't see the point to things like 1080p or lossless audio otherwise, you'd be better off just buying the dvd

Hey guys.

First time post. Only have a handful of blu-rays so far, but been exposed to dvd movies for quite some time. As I get more worthy mentions, I will amend this list.

1. Kingdom of Heaven - Director's cut (extra 45 mins on top of original release) Goes for over 3hrs. Transfer is superb. Watch any of the snow scenes or fight scenes and you see what I mean. I previously owned the dvd version and enjoyed it for what it was but looking on the u.s. blu ray forum and the ranting they gave it, I just had to buy. Suprised no one has mentioned this movie so far. Do yourself a favour!

2. Avatar - Enjoy the fantastic world of James Cameron. Cry when you know in so many months time they will release a deluxe disc release and you will have to fork out money again.

3. Transformers - Big robots beating each other up and Megan Fox!

Have Dark Knight sitting on my "to watch" pile. Again going by others about the quality of, I bought this, and can't wait to see.
Trying very hard not to get the blu ray LOTR trilogy theatrical version. Waiting until they decide to bring the extended version out. Was quite annoyed when I first collected the original dvd version for them to release an extended one as well. Money grabbers!!!
Going by comments and ratings above, I am going to check out Star Trek 2009 and Serenity.

Hi Manarin,

Yes, Kingdom of Heaven: Director's Cut seems to have slipped through the radar. I saw it firstly on DVD and was not too impressed with it. It seemed disjointed. Then I also read some rave reviews on the Blu-ray release, so I decided to buy it.

What an improvement, both in PQ, AQ and the actual movie. All of the bits that were left on the cutting room floor have been included, which gives the movie a much better "flow"

A personal favourite for many reasons, this release of the cult classic features a fantastic transfer that is completely true to the source. No detectable EE or DNR and great detail is present in the very filmic and natural image. The audio quality is fantastic too with a solid mix and plenty of clarity. For a smaller budgeted film from the 80's this is as good as it gets with Jack Burton never looking better. The package of supplemental features is also quite in depth.
This movie is one of my all time favourites. My two sons and I watched it many times when they were younger, and we enjoyed every viewing. Its good to hear that it has a great transfer on Blu, so I will be getting this shortly.

Indeed. I haven't seen the original now for a few years but after watching this version I don't know how I could cope watching the theatrical release.

I really can't recommend it enough. I'm not one to rely on screencaps, but this one (beware 1mb file size) from the bluray.com review shows just how good it looks. Great colour reproduction, a healthy but not overbearing grain structure with no DNR to smooth it out, sharp detail with no EE to get it that way and a very clean print. There are a couple of scenes where the PQ dips slightly, but it's a better presentation than I could ever have hoped for for a cult film from the 80's that I love so much. Nothing beats the mix of Carpenter and Russell!

It's definitely a cult classic that grows on you the more you watch it, should definitely listen to the commentary with Carpenter and Russell, it's a riot!

Hi Suntory_Times,

If any of us decide to update our Top 10, will you adjust the list, or are the lists that we have now considered as final.

Also, if you do update the main list, as people change their preferences do we need to let you know. Could be quite a chore once more people get on board.
