Got them both on order, Expect the US version to ship this week. Will have to find another Movie to fill the space that this leaves in my 10 most wanted when it finally arrives.

I was very sad to hear the news of William Peter Blatty's passing today. The Exorcist is one of my all-time favorite films, and Blatty's novel is one of best books I've ever read.

This morning, it occured to me that

A) I don't have The Exorcist. How can I call myself a horror fan, have dozens of horror movies, and not have this flick? How did this happen?

B) I found this edition for 8 bucks.

Clearly the power of christ compels me to pick this up.

Default The Exorcist (1973)

Thought I’d start a thread for the Exorcist and all the different versions it has.

Original 2-disc edition:

40th Anniversary 3-disc edition:

And for those who want the complete collection (for whatever reason) we have been “graced” with such an anthology of cheaply made trash:

By the way, I would appreciate it if anyone could tell me the difference between the 2-disc version and the 3-disc 40th Anniversary edition, and also if the 4K restoration has received a BD release, or if the older master is the only version available on BD.

The 40th AE adds a bonus disc with two featurettes ("Beyond Comprehension: William Peter Blatty’s The Exorcist" featurette (27:49); "Talk of the Devil" featurette (19:50) but otherwise seem to be identical.

I've never seen the 40th anniversary edition in the shops. For a while, I wondered if it even existed.

Any home video release that has the writer and the director still arguing over the proper ending for the film forty years later, should be in everyone's collection.

I had that DVD at one time, was one of my first DVD purchases, importing it along with the first release of Blade Runner.
It had a 2.0 soundtrack that wasn't the new mix.

It has the original Warner logo and unaltered morph sequence. Also different colour timing with more natural colours compared to the colder blue in the bedroom scenes added to later releases.

It is a flipper DVD, with the open matte version on one side with a 5.1 track (not the same mix as later releases. Supposedly based on the original 6 track) and other side having widescreen and 2.0 track (not true theatrical which was mono I believe or formentioned 6-track, but still more accurate mix than later 25th anniversary).

Definitely worth owning if you're a fan.

But do you have the original book written for that big box set that got pulled at the last minute and replaced by a quick cut and paste by Kermode because of yet another pissing contest between Blatty and Friedkin, the latter in full on Fahrenheit 451 mode?

First I’ve heard. I have the US Version of this large vhs/ost and it has a 52 page book by Kermode. Are there two different books available?

I know there are different versions of the Fear of God documentary alright.

Four different cuts of The Fear of God and, thanks to Friedkin throwing a hissy fit, two different books. The original book never made it into the boxed set anywhere after Friedkin demanded the entire 75,000 print run be burned (he actually asked for the burning to be videoed, but I doubt that happened). The small consignment for the 1998 UK theatrical release escaped (it was supposed to be sold at the Warner Village or used as competition prizes) but never made it to any boxed set. The design and pictures are identical, the text and interviews completely different except from a couple of places where Kermode just copies parts verbatim but unattributed.

There's a review of it on Amazon UK and a discussion about it on the captainhowdy.com forums.

I have the 40th anniversary Blu and a custom BD-R of the unaltered theatrical cut with the original mono track. (I kept the former mainly because of Kermode's 74 min doc). I'm sure this'll come out on UHD before long... but no doubt they'll eff that up, too!

For a complete "The Exorcist" collection, you'd also need this:

I've got the complete anthology BD set and the 1997 DVD.

Tbh as much as I love the film, that's all I really need until the inevitable UHD release comes out.
