I agree that The Thing is probably the greatest remake ever. I also liked the remake of Clash of the Titans, although neither movie followed the actual story of the myth very accurately as I understand it.

I am just going to stick with remakes that I thought were as good or better then the original. Meaning that while I liked the Dawn of the Dead remake, I did not think it was as good as the original.

John Carpenter's The Thing
The Fly
The Texas Chainsaw Massacre
The Departed
Cape Fear
The Ring
3:10 to Yuma
Fistful of Dollars
Last House on the Left
The Hills Have Eyes
The Blob
Ben Hur

Dirty Rotten Scoundrels (1988) the Original was Bedtime Story (1964)

Brando played the role Stever Martin did in the remake.

Why arbitrarily cut yourself off from decades of great film-making? With a little patience you might find you need to add a few to that list!

You hate older films, but you like a film in Basterds that references anything from silent films, to propaganda films, to G.W. Pabst, to Max Linder?

Better than original:
Payback
The Departed
Scarface
The Longest Yard
The Fly

*I am Legend
*not sure if it is a remake or just a different chapter from the same book that Omega Man and The Last Man on Earth came from. I am Legend is so much better than Omega Man. Never saw The Last Man.

Anyways, I will second those who listed Man on Fire and The Crazies. Great stuff.

Also, I haven't seen the original Italian Job but I enjoyed the remake.

Yeah, I've never heard anyone say that Saw is a remake, and the Wikipedia and IMDB pages don't refer to it as a remake. Maybe there's a similar movie that is believed to inspire it, but Saw is not a remake.

Why do you hate older films? Any paticular reason? And what do you consider old?
