Who does that?! What about deaf people?!

I mean I'm almost fluent in english, but I wanted to share that great movie with friends, but now I'm screwed!

DVDBeaver actually says there are English, German, and French on it. That's not the case?

Nope they ****ed up on that one, they also say it's a European version that would be done by studio canal in France, but it's false, pathé made this one in France with an 1080i50 transfer.

OK, so you are talking about the French disc, and not the UK disc.....

I was surprised, too, that there are no English subtitles. There are German ones but only when you choose "Deutschland" at the first menue screen ... so I'm happy with this release. ;-)

UK distributors do this all the time for some reason.

Yes it would seem that the info on the DVDBeaver review is incorrect. This is further evidenced by the screenshot they posted of the setup menu when "United Kingdom" is chosen--only the two audio options are listed.

It's an Optimum release and they hardly ever bother to include English sub-titles. I find it really annoying - added to the fact that they seldom make the effort to include extras either. I think Studio Canal, who provide many of their masters, are the real culprits.

So the English subs are definitely missing from the UK blu?

Just to double (maybe triple check), the US version has a few bad words dubbed over? So to get the true version of the film I should import the UK disc?

Yes, the C-word is in the European cut, but was dubbed for the U.S. PG-13 version. Also, the U.K. BD has more extras.

The Ghost Writer won European Film Awards 2010 in following categories:
  • Film
  • Director (Roman Polanski)
  • Screenwriter (Robert Harris & Roman Polansk)
  • Actor (Ewan McGregor)
  • Production designer (Albrecht Konrad)
  • Composer (Alexandre Desplat)

Looks like a serious contender for American Academy Awards.

I doubt it to be honest, even with the 10 best picture nominations. Not heard that much Oscar buzz surrounding it, probably because it came out at the wrong time of year.

I'd love to see a nomination for Olivia Williams for Best Supporting Actress though. Other than that, perhaps another supporting acting nomination or adapted screenplay? But I honestly wouldn't be surprised if it didn't get any.

I've been wondering the same thing. Could anyone who actually owns a copy of this release confirm whether English subtitles are present or not?

Even more annoying with Optimum for me is their forced trailers - I bought their release of Che, and they had the Main Menu and even chapter skip functions disabled for the trailers at the beginning, the most you could do is fast forward to get through them. Is Ghost this way?

glad the UK release kept the title the ghost, which is so much of a better title than 'the ghost writer',which takes out all nuance and double meaning of the title

I just received my copy and I can confirm that optional German subtitles are the only ones present on the disc, and that's only when you choose Germany as a country from the menu. This plays the Kinowelt Arthaus logo and a series of SD PAL German-dubbed trailers. This "German version" does not have the opening "The Ghost" title card, and instead jumps right in to the opening shot of the film. German subs are also available for the extras, so it looks like this is the same source as on the Kinowelt BD.

Selecting the United Kingdom gives you the Optimum logo followed by different SD PAL trailers (and a hilariously stupid Galaxy bar advert ) and the opening "The Ghost" title card in the film. German subtitles are unavailable for the film in this setting.

One final point: I have not seen the US PG-13 version, but this "uncensored" UK BD contains several uses of the word f**k (10-15 times, always as an expletive) and one use of the word c**t directed to a male character. Bearing the number of edits/overdubs in mind, I would suggest avoiding the US disc. For those outside of Region B, apparently the Canadian BD is also "uncensored", although I believe it lacks the meatier extras of this Region B LOCKED release.

Wow! Thank you very very much for such a thorough reply. It's really appreciated.

This is definitely worth a re-watch in light of the Chilcot report.
