Default Warner Bros is shady

Looks like Warner Bros has already started. Try to decrypt this, as read on the back cover of Phantom of the Opera on HD-DVD (link to the cover below), which is also controlled by the AACS agreement.

"Levels of video and audio standards stated require audio-visual equipment capability and appropriate digital connections."

Uhhhh... Well, it's got Dolby TrueHD, it's got 1080p... exactly what do you need for what? I can buy that you need HDMI for 1080p. What about 1080i? It does not say what the resolution will be if you don't have a digital connection. It could be 1080i or 540p. Who knows? Not anybody that picks this disc up at the store and is trying to decide whether or not to buy it!

This is exactly what I was worried about.

Personally I think that simply sounds like a generic disclaimer about Toshiba's HD-DVD players not supporting 1080p (not related to ICT), but we should know as soon as it is released and someone is able to test it. Until then, I'd steer clear of Warner's HD-DVD titles.

The consumer electronics mags should mention the inferiority of HD DVD when the reviews start coming out.

If that's the case, then they lack the required ICT statement on the sleeve. Nothing else on the sleeve remotely addresses ICT.

The BDA and the DVD Forum should approve one and only one offiical format for conveying this type of info on the sleeve so that it is easy to read. A grid format simmilar to what Universal generally seems to put on their DVDs would be great. This is something I thought they should do with all DVDs before any of the HD formats were created.

With Universal DVDs, you can tell ***at a glance*** (Out of Sight used as example)
Languages
Surround Sound Formats (and how many channels for each)
Subtitles
Aspect Ratio
Anamorphic or not
Dual or single layer
Length of the feature

For HD discs they would just have to add a few more, such as:

Maximum analog resoultion for the feature/extras
Maximum digital resoultion for the feature/extras
Video codec

They could also include the rating for the film and why (Rated R: language, violence, sexual content) in this grid.

Region number (if the HD formats will have them)

Disc type (like DVD-5, DVD-9) so that we know whether WB is cutting corners with their RED laser "blu" ray disc format.

I realize this is alot of info and real estate is limited on the sleeve, but I believe all of this info could be conveyed efficiently if all the studios had to use the same format.

In case you couldn't tell, I'm one of those early adopters that has 2 HDTVs (55" and 65") with only analog inputs. It pisses me off that they would even THINK about abandoning (or even giving the studios the OPTION to abandon) those who are responsible for their success.

There's no obligation to state that a title doesn't use ICT, only that it does. It hasn't been confirmed if Warner's titles will use ICT or not yet, so we'll have to wait until they are released. If the titles don't use ICT then I expect no mention of it on the cover.
