+1 and we have more female protagonists in movies today, but not nearly as many as we should!

I think that if you cast Christina Hendricks as Shepard most of the fans would more than okay with it. I may play as Male Shepard myself (oddly enough modeled on a young Edward James Olmos to make him look as rough as a badger's arse) but i can't imagine a studio saying outright No to a female lead...

I just don't see any way a studio seriously considers using a female Shepard, as much as I would advocate for it, I don't see that happening at all. Nobody is going to bet on a female lead in a likely very expensive sci-fi film. I don't see the studios as a particularly gender progressive place right now anyways, so the idea they would even entertain the thought is foreign. The film is being written by males for a male audience.

You can make examples of Aliens and Prometheus, but those are rare exceptions to the rule, not the status quo.

Is it right? Hello no. Should Shepard be a female? Hell yes. Will it happen? Not a chance.

2 was such a drastic change from 1. It was mission structured and I hated that. Storyline was only so so. It didn't feel like a Mass Effect game, it was...different.

Whatever Shep anyone chose to play, Bioware's own statistics showed that players who opted for a female Shepard are a (very vocal) minority. That said, although I know it'll never happen, I think the ideal scenario would be to cast two actors as Shepard. Simply shoot all the Shepard footage with both male and female lead and keep all the non-Shepard footage the same. Release both versions simultaneously like was done with Clue and its multiple endings.

It's hard to skip when it's in most threads. Look, I respect your views, and I'm not belittling them or anything because I think they're perfectly valid, but every thread doesn't need to be a soapbox.

Mass Effect has both male and female protagonists. Neither deserve to be in the film more than the other, so we'll see how it goes.

What are you talking about? There are several options for a male protagonist in RE and Underworld was an entirely new property they couldve done whatever they wanted. Furthermore both franchises have had longer legs than most male-led movies of the genre.

I've seen it before and get why fans would want it but, frankly, it's too "convenient".

I like the explanation given for the original design:

The debate about whether or not to reveal Tali’s face was another one that lasted a long time. Versions of her were being worked on fairly often. These were three that I thought worked in their own way. Personally, I thought it would be the perfect opportunity to push players to the edge. Tali was like a pen pal, or a friend you’ve only ever known online. Depending on how attached to her a player was, how well could they handle her appearance challenging their expectations? If she looked a little too alien, just a little too repellant, would they still feel the same way about her? Or did her personality and your history together trump appearances? It’s an interesting area to explore and I hope we can find other ways to ask that question.

To me, this has always been (and always will be) Tali. This was drawn during ME1 when she was first being designed, and when her appearance under the mask wasn’t a big deal yet.
