Price Tracker via this site....Which I am addicted to...
If a movie gets to 14.99 or less, I usually jump on it. Example: Minority Report - 16.49 as of this post - I will wait til it gets a tad lower...And then buy it WITH Collateral... Those 2 movies rock ![]() |

it used to be by whatever looked interesting to me. this sucked though because i ended up buying a lot of movies for $25 ad $30 a piece, which was a mistake. so i started waiting for films to drop down to the $10-$15 price range.
if it's around $10, i'll generally buy anything. i mean, it's only $10 and i hate renting, so might as well buy it right? ![]() ![]() |

I buy my Blu's from BB, Wal-Mart, Amazon, and the Trading Forum. Anything over $20 is usually too much for me. I mostly collect my favorite action movies because I think the Blu-ray format really does them justice, whereas I'm content with my comedies on DVD. |

Mostly upgrades of DVDs I currently own and I own a LOT (more than a thousand) but I'm trying to limit it now according to genre-- mostly sci-fi, action, thriller, classics, and my favorites-- not planning to upgrade TV shows, dramas, documentaries, foreign language films, although I still buy comedies if they're at a good price-- like the Wayne's World Blus currently at $7.99 each. I also buy new releases that I loved at the theaters (although I may blind buy occasionally based on reviews). Price is definitely a factor, although I've noticed that newly released Blus are coming out cheaper now than they did a couple of years ago before I turned Blu, which is great. Also, I have been trading my DVDs and buying used Blus. I had less than 100 Blus at the beginning of the year and acquired more than 100 Blus these last few months. At the rate I'm going with all these deals at amazon and retail stores, I may acquire another 100 Blus by the end of the year.

I have very little focus. I can't even say I just plan stuff I want since I usually go for something I want and come out with that and other stuff I decided to blind buy. At most I could say that I won't buy Christmas movies at any time of the year other than the holidays

Well, when I'm thinking of buying a new movie on Blu, I usually check out the review for it on this website. If the image or sound quality sucks, then I skip over it. So far, most of my Blu purchases have been upgrades from the DVD version, the only exception being "Prince Caspian" (which I never found cheap enough to buy - the Blu was on clearance for $23 at Fry's).
As for collecting movies in general, I really don't buy many of the newer films, because 90% of Hollywood cinema is utter crap to me. Of the 200 or more films released in 2009, I only saw 8 of them in theaters, and only 2 are in my DVD collection. If a film comes out on Blu that I really enjoyed as a kid, I'll probably pick it up, and I'm only interested in 3 or 4 of the summer blockbusters every year. Otherwise, my collection stays rather small, in comparison to most. |

But I guess I buy them like this: 1) New releases 2) Upgrade "top faves" I have on an old format (DVD/VHS) 3) Older movies I may have missed 4) Upgrade older movies I have on an old format (DVD/VHS) I realize 2 & 4 are almost the same, but there are some older movies I can wait for and some I need "yesterday." |

I collect mine by purchasing them and placing them on the shelf next to each other.
![]() In all seriousness... I can't say that there's a really specific set of rules that I stick to. It really depends on what is coming out, how much I want it (aka how much of a priority it is), and whether or not the price is acceptible to me. Essnetially it's on a case by case basis. I tend to keep an eye on the release dates for movies and TV shows that are coming out on Blu-Ray and DVD. Most things that I want I will probably by when they come out (I do look for the best price possible), especially for new releases (meaning something coming out on both DVD and Blu-Ray for the first time, and not a catalog title that's been around for years but is just coming out on Blu-Ray). If there is a title that I am iffy about, whether or not I get it right away really depends on the price and how much other stuff that I do really want is coming out at the same time (especially in the time frame from fall until Christmas, when a lot of summer movies and TV Show season sets from the previous season are coming out). If a lot of things are being released that I want, I may hold off on lesser priority releases until the price comes down or there is a good sale. With catalog titles, it really depends on a lot of factors. How much I like the movie, how interested I am in owning it (if I don't already have it on DVD), how much of an improvement over the DVD version it will be (if I already own the DVD), to some extent the genre (while there are exceptions, I am more likely to rebuy movies with a lot of action or special effects on Blu-Ray than I would be with many comedies). Also, with catalog titles, if I already own the movie on DVD and haven't upgraded yet, but a sequel is coming out that I plan to buy on Blu-Ray (because at this point I'm not going to buy the sequel on DVD), I will then be more motivated to upgrade the catalog title to Blu-Ray to have them all in the same format. Everyone has the right to collect how they want to, and there is no "wrong way" to collect, and I'm not saying that my way is "superior" or anything, but I have to say that I somewhat find the collecting style of the OP rather confusing. I really don't focus on any one specific genre at a time. Sure, if a particular holiday or something is coming up, I may get the urge to buy some movies related to that holiday if I don't already have them. And sure, there are times where I may get on a kick with a particular genre.... though usually it's not just a genre in general but more so something even more specific (perhaps a particular series of films, or a certian types of movies by the same directors or have a similar style, etc). But that's usually because I've had a sudden renewed interest in them... and it's in addition to my other general, non-genre or sub-category specific style of collecting. I don't sit down in advance and say "Okay, in June and July I am focusing on comedy, in August and Septmber I am focusing on action, etc." Again, there's nothing wrong with that, but I guess I just can't wrap my mind around the logic of it. To what extent is this taken? I mean, if it's a "comedy" collecting month, and an action movie comes out that you really like and really want, do you force yourself not to buy it even if you can easily afford it just because that's not the genre that you preplanned to collect at that time? It seems a little silly to me if that is the case. But, that's just my opinion. Last edited by Dynamo of Eternia; 05-25-2010 at 08:11 PM. |

For me, if I want a title and I think it's worth the price. Example: I really want Glee when it is released in Sept. but I think it's too high priced and will pass until the price is lowered. I also check for titles I want thru Amazon, their sellers and Ebay and once I feel it's a good price I will be more likely to purchase it it my finances allow.

Once a week (usually on Tuesday) I go on Amazon and see what movies are on my wishlist that are less than $20. I budget myself $50/week. Most times I can get 3 movies per week. I decide what goes on my wishlist based on the trailers and the buzz a movie gets on the internet. I blind buy most everything. I have a pretty nice collection, although I have wound up with a few hackers.

I only buy movies that I want to buy on bluray and are worth it to be on bluray.
So not even all my favorites are bought. So for example, I really like Pineapple Express but I won't buy that on bluray since it is not "bluray worthy". I could not careless to watch it in HD. I started collecting bluray back when The Dark Knight came out and if you check my collection these are the movies that I want on bluray. I did not care how much they cost I just wanted to have them in HD. As for newer releases or catalog, I now wait till the price really drops. I value my money more than movies. |

I collect by the genres that I like. LIke most people on here I wait untill the price is reasonable to me. If I really like the movie I will buy it the day it comes out if I have not seen the film then i will rent it and if I like it and the price is reasonable I buy it. Oh yeah and the big one is Am I or someone in my family going to watch the film more than once. I have to go through my collection and see which films I or someone has not watched more than and try to get rid of them as I am running out of space.
