Fight Club
Se7en Benjamin Button Zodiac Panic Room The Game Alien 3 Fincher's films ranked from "Great!" to "Awful!", with the middle films appropriately of middle quality. Only two make my favorite 200 at the moment, but Fight Club did make #3. |

1. Zodiac
2. Se7en (Very Close though) 3. Fight Club 4. The Game 5. Alien 3 6. Curious Case of Benjamin Button 7. Panic Room Se7en used to be my all time top no. 1 but a recent watch of Zodiac took it to the top spot although Se7en is so close. Fight Club is great but those 2 better it for me, love the Game and can't wait for a Blu release of that maybe after Se7en is released. These days I'll take Fincher's Alien 3 over Cameron's Aliens, Curious Case was visually impressive but left me rather cold and Panic Room is just an auto pilot effort from the man. I hope whether it be the Dragon Tattoo remake with hopefully Daniel Craig or the possible chance of his take on 2000 Leagues Under The Sea knocks his next film out the park after Curious not really blowing me away. Though alongside Chris Nolan he's one of the Directors that really still excites me far more than Spielberg or others do these days. |

I know very well I'm going to get negative repped for saying this, but David Fincher is easily one of the most overrated directors in Hollywood and easily one of my least favorite directors. It's not that he himself is not a good director, Benjamin Button proved he has a good eye for filming, but his movies are terrible. Fight Club=terrible. Benj. Button=terrible. Alien 3=terrible. Seven=terrible. The Game=mediocre. Panic Room=mediocre. Zodiac=good but overrated. The problem with these films is more the writing and story than anything else, so I admit it's a bit unfair to blame it all of on Fincher. I do appreciate the distinct dark mood he creates in his films, and I think that mood will be good for his upcoming adaptation of The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (which I was pissed he was chosen for, but that's a different issue).
I chose Zodiac because I think it's the only one of his films that's beyond mediocre. The reason is because of its subject matter and Downey Jr. more than anything that Fincher did or did not do. That being said, his best directing job is by far Benjamin Button, although he still didn't deserve an Oscar nom for it. I think Fincher is one of those directors where if you like one of his films you're bound to like the others as well, similar to someone like Kurosawa or David Lean (I can't believe I just put Fincher and Kurosawa/Lean in the same sentence). In that respect, I can understand why he's such a popular director. |

What problems do you have with the writing? I honestly can't find any big flaws in those movies.
To me, every second movie is the better one. So, Se7en, Fight Club and Zodiac are his better movies, with Alien 3, The Game, Panic Room and Benjamin Button still good, but not as great as the others. He is one of the rare few directors in Hollywood who knows how to put a great DVD together, and I have to applaud him for that. I hope his next movie The Social Network will be great. With a script by Aaron Sorkin, it pretty much has to be. Can't wait for it. |

Problems with the writing? The Game=plot holes and a big suspension of belief. Alien 3=the beginning negates its two classic predecessors in an unforgiveable way and its nothing but a cliche-ridden film. Panic Room=mediocre all around with an interesting premise, so nothing stands out as "bad." Benjamin Button=a short story that was never meant to be taken literally and is completely uninvolving. Zodiac=pretty well written actually, which is why I think its his best film. Fight Club=people jump on the bandwagon of liking the film simply because anarchy is "cool." The script lacks solid pacing and its message is deplorable imo. Once again, I can understand ppl liking his films. They just don't do it for me at all. My favorite director is Terrence Malick and I'm well aware that he's very polarizing with some ppl loving his films and others hating them, so I can understand being on one side. Then again, nobody has really ever questioned Malick's greatness as a director, whereas many people and critics have questioned Fincher's. |
