This isn't really a rumour. It's fact that Warner is under pressure right now. How serious a threat this is, is a matter of opinion. They aren't denying anything. Not a peep. If you cared about your customers, wouldn't you say something?

The HDM market isn't even close to where Warner was predicting it would be, and they could go into save ass mode and look for a scapegoat: Sony and the PS/3.

But, not giving the PS/3 one Xmas of worldwide availability without startup shortages would be definitely unfair. As would crowing about neutrality for 14 months in PR and ads, and then screwing 2/3 of your customers. But, who said life was fair?

A nice cheque that dwarfs the profits from Blu-ray sales, and voila, justification to the shareholders, and a balm for the moral misgivings.

thanks for breaking down my train of thought Dr. Phil...

I've only seen this on a few internet sites....

AVS forums is a large community...but just because a rumor is picking up from there to a couple websites....doesn't mean enough for me...

it sounds like something someone decided to add on to the Paramount news....

Keep the polite phone calls up to Warner, send properly typed, polite letters.

You can decide the future of the format war.

Bill Hunt and The Digital Bits was the first to give it any more bite than our own insecurity.

I would think Warner would stay BD exclusive at this point...

for BD to let Paramount go and have Warner up in the air would probably tell you which studio they care about more if they make a serious effort to keep Warner on board..

Warner is the one that is spending a lot of money trying to get a NEW FORMAT DISC to the market next year....
yeah..
a format that will RUN ON BOTH PLAYERS! Their entire strategy is to just focus on neutrality/dual format. They plan to have all their releases on both formats and are still playing make-up for Blu-ray since they released some HD-DVD titles early on that never made it to Bu-ray yet.
They are the ones that boasted their sale for 300 made record HD sales due to dual format support. I think they have a point. Right now in the market, the numbers are so low for HD content, that it would be better to support both, and yet supporting one format is better for the long run (if you choose the right format).
They won't go HD-DVD exclusive, I think BDA would try to stop this cause it would mean major catastrophe for Blu-ray.

Let's continue to show our support to Warner buy purchasing their movies. Next week is "Training Day" for me.

I posted a question about this on the Insiders' Thread in the (vain?) hope that someone in the know will come back on it. There just has to be a way, however expensive in the short run, of containing the damage and ensuring no repeat of the Paramount disaster.

Based on what?

That's a real stretch. Look at their history. They started out as a full HD-DVD supporter and then ended up doing nothing more but withholding a bunch of titles from Blu (Batman) or issuing quickie HD-DVD port afterthoughts.

How do you get the idea from this track record that all of a sudden they're going to come to Blu's rescue?

Before this news, I think most of us thought there was a decent chance Paramount come all the way to Blu.

So much for that concept.

We'll see. There's a lot the insiders see and hear that folks like us on the street will never know about, so just because "we" don't see or hear something doesn't really mean much at all.

I think you're looking from extra hope and optimism that may or may not be there.

I salute you for that, but I really don't feel that optimistic right now.

if MS recouped their spending habits on this THD crap....then that would make their decision easy...

or if ::gasp:: Sony threw them an offer......I mean being the superior format with the greater studio support will get you only so far if you let the 2 studio's that were in balance slip right through your fingers...

I am expecting a split here....

Paramount HD DVD
Warner BD

You're all over the place.

Why do you say this? He's disclaimed everything as rumor where it needed to be.

I think you're in some denial myself. And now the personal attacks get thrown around.

I like how you quote the parts that you want to quote....

do you work for the Philadelphia Daily News by any chance?...

the fact that paramount jumped and BD let them....I have a little more faith in them being able to keep Warner....

they would be foolish to let both fall...

They've been foolish on allowing this format war to go on as long as it has. They were foolish to allow any studio to leave neutrality. They were foolish to stumble out of the gate with a less than spectacular launch to begin with, to put it kindly.

The combined BDA should have been able to outbid whatever offer the HD-DVD folks put on the table.

And I quoted all of your posts directly, with no editing whatsoever, so try again.

Calling it like I see it.

I'm still waiting to see you make your case for how a studio like Warner, which has been a quasi HD-DVD studio this whole time anyways...suddenly goes all Blu?

You mean neutral, right?

If Warner isn't going to 180 on all their talk for the past 14+ months, then clearly staying neutral is clearly the right move. They crow about having 30% of the HD market, and then are willing to drop that to 10% in one move?

But, Paramount/DWA shows the top studio brass may be nothing but money *****s. And why should think Nickerson is different if he's not out there screaming his support for both formats?
