that's one interpretation of the question.

my interpretation is: do you prefer PQ or AQ?

My TV produces 1080i but I don't give a ****! AQ is what makes the Blu-Ray experience more defined than just PQ IMO!

however, the PQ/AQ preference is important, when judging a transfer, as it sets your threshold for purchase. for example. let's suppose that I think AQ is twice as important as PQ. If the transfer is 3/5 PQ and 4.5/5 AQ, I may go ahead and purchase it, since the AQ transfer is great. On the other hand, someone who prefers PQ over AQ may not make that purchase. This is an example where the PQ/AQ preference is relevant, not fiction. The reality is that the PQ/AQ transfers aren't the same in quality, otherwise we wouldn't have reviews that score each.
Exactly, you perfectly understood the essence of my question.

I'm more inclined to buy a movie that has 3 star Picture Quality with a 5 star DTS-HD Audio Score. Simply because I know that 2 or 3 stars is still better than DVD.

I'd be hesitant to buy a movie that has 5 star Video Quality with a Dolby Digital soundtrack. Granted I do own a few, only because I got them at great prices.

The members that don't have a surround system will most likely vote for PQ.

If this thread was rewind a year earlier (2009). I would of voted PQ all the way because I didn't care about sound at all. Now that I got into HT stuff, my experience towards High Def is all about AQ to me. Regardless how good it looks on TV, it better be backed up with a good AQ soundtrack.

last week I watched Master and Commander with a buddy of mine. Before the initial battle sequence, when the people are walking around the ship and you can hear every squeak and creak of the wood of the hull of the ship, I told my buddy to close his eyes and tell me what it sounds like over the surround system. he goes: "i am on that ship"

I have never seen Master and Commander, but I heard the AQ very note worthy.

I've avoided quite a few titles due to inferior audio quality codecs during the format war.

Both are important but I appreciate the amazing sounds of uncompressed audio more than the video on a lot of movies. Somethings like Planet Earth though its a bit different.

There are some titles out there with lossy tracks that still sound above average. The Assassination of Jesse James, Flags of Our Fathers, Gods and Generals, and Million Dollar Baby are some excellent examples.

I'm sure there are.. It is just when I'm paying a premium to upgrade, I don't want a half-assed product. After having heard DTS-MA it is really hard to go back

Well, I think in some cases it's about disc space. Jesse James was thrown onto a 25 GB disc and the movie was about three hours so I doubt there was enough room for a lossless track. Of course using a 50 GB disc would have solved this problem.
