If you're interested in that particular period of history
you might find these movies interesting as well:

"It Happened on July 20th (1955)"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0048040/

and
"The Plot to Assassinate Hitler (1955)"
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0047790/

starring famous german actors Bernhard Wicki and Wolfgang Preiß.
Both films will give a different or aditional view to german officer's
resistance against Hitler's madness.

Far better. I just wish I could have got my hands on the unaltered German HD DVD version since the UK BD does have some DNR.

Valkyrie and Untergang are both some of my favorite films that deal with that era. I was pleasantly surprised by Valkyrie, having no preconceptions of it, but I expected Der Untergang to be good, and it was!

I forgave Cruise for his insanity after seeing Tropic Thunder.

I found Valkyrie to be rather shallow, but a fairly enjoyable movie. Still need to see it on Bluray.

I can't critique the blu ray, since I saw this in theatre but the film itself is pretty solid imo but nothing I would want to re-watch a lot

Yeah, I didn't care for either. And I love WWII movies. I just found it boring. And I fell asleep in tbe theater. Which ironically was the last film I went to see in the theater.

The trailers made it look like a typical WWII film, but it turned out just to be a assassination conspiracy plot film (which don't get wrong, that's exactly what it should have been) but I was just expecting a little more battle action judging from the trailer that had that scene from N. Africa.

Absolutely: If you're unclear about the motives of the "good" German officers, Downfall captures the general nervousness of the higher-ups watching their commander disintegrate while the Russian front was advancing.

German filmmakers have enough guilt to talk about their own war, without anyone else nobly talking about it for them.
