Sounds great, but I wonder why they didn't digibook this classic?

So they're still angry about that? Oh well, guess I'll just have to try and go elsewhere to get a look at some screenshots...

It seems silly. Maltese Falcon is a cinematic treasure. Based on this site's review it seems a stellar job was done on this release. So why deprive us of caps because one didn't like the scores on the LotR release? (It's not like this was the only site to be critical of it. AV forums tore it apart. If any thing, this site was kind).

Is anyone else noticing a lip-sync problem with Maltese? I watched it last night and the audio was almost a full frame early.

I did notice some at the beginning at least. This Blu-ray looks great though. I was going to wait for a lower price but went back and bought it anyway to go with Sierra Madre.

Just got Maltese Falcon from Amazon. It looks great. Detail in the darks, great contrast, sharp and clear sound. Too bad the supplements are standard definition. They could have at least bumped the cartoons up with a retransfer. Can't wait to see Treasure tomorrow.

Just watched mine tonight too and it's excellent. It's not quite Casablanca but it's awfully close. I saw a lot of detail I'd never noticed before and the blacks were very solid. In fact, I'd say it compares very favorably to Criterion's The Third Man.
I had to tweak my audio delay but it didn't appear to be an issue with the transfer. Over the years I've played the dvd on a variety of players and always had to play with the audio delay a little. It's not a problem with the audio itself, it's more that the staccato, rhythmic dialogue style coupled with the full-face headshots make out-of-sync audio *really* obvious. (I'm also wondering if mono soundtracks take less processing and thus tend to get just a bit more ahead of the video than other soundtracks might. I've had to tweak delay on other blus but I had to nudge this one by a good half second). |
