It'll be sooner with blu-ray, DVD took a long time to overtake VHS.

I think I'll wait until 2013. By that time Lucas will have tried flogging the original versions as well, and when sales of those dwindle, he'll release the 'ultimate set' with both versions. I'll buy that one.

I don't think that'll happen because George Lucas has said time and time agaian that he won't release the originals. Yes, they came out on DVD a few years ago, but that transfer was taken from the LaserDisc, so it was easy and cheap to use.

If anything his sounds like the Ultimate Set, because you have all six films in there, deleted scenes from the OT (which didn't appear on the DVD), new documentaries, trailers, etc. So pretty much anything and everything to do with Star Wars, and it doesn't sound like you'll be able to add anything new to this afterwards. If George Lucas had wanted the originals to be released then he would have put them in this set.

And it actually sounds like this'll be the final time all th six films will be released.

When home video releases of any Star Wars movies are concerned, Lucas almost never kept his word. Things like releasing the DVD of Phantom Menace after Episode III, releasing the Trilogy box set after Episode III, and the Original Trilogy Laserdisc box, which would be the last time the OT would be released on any format, turned out to be false. I really hope he'll do it someday. As it stands, none of the movies he directed are available in their original theatrical version. Every movie has something altered. I just hope he'll turn around and preserve the originals, before it might be too late.

Personally I'm not too fused that the originals aren't inculded, but I would really like to see them in HD.

And can I just ask KubrickFan, did he also alter something in American Graffiti, because of all his films I would have thought that'd be the one where nothing could be changed.

God, with all of the amazing original poster art available to them, I hope they don't hire that 6 year old with Photoshop to do the sleeve designs again!

Original Trilogy first. Then in order of preference for the others - Sith, Phantom Menace & then Attack of the Clones.

Personally I'd watch them from 1-6, because then you're watching them in order of the events, not to mention the fact that the prequels are given the episode numbers I, II and III for a reason.

I'm not waiting 6 hrs or so before I get to the masterpieces that are A New Hope & Empire Strikes Back. Original Trilogy first.

On the bright side, you'll also get 3 popcorn movies as 'extras.' You may wanna watch one on a rainy day.

In the quotes by him NY Times article he does indicate that the classic versions will come, not just right now.

No, he said it'd be too difficult to include the originals, because the qulaity of them is not very good, and it'd be extremely expensive to restore them. This is why he's including the Special Editions and the 2004 DVD editions.

If you can find the quote that says the originals will eventually come out then I'll be proven wrong, but at the moment everything I've read about the Blu-ray set points towards the fact that the originals won't be released on Blu-ray, whether it be from George Lucas or an official statement.

They're all popcorn movies, it's just the original trilogy were much better ones :P

If they do just release the whole thing I will just get it, and then if they eventually release the original trilogy I'll get that and sell the big box. Whilst I dislike Lucas's revisionism, I did grow up with the 1997 special editions (though I know the DVD versions weren't even exactly the same as those...) so it only really bothers me in theory - it won't when I'm actually watching the movies.

NY Times slices up the quotes pretty badly but read the two paragraphs together you'll get that he is indeed indicating the OOT will come. Pay close attention to the text in bold.

“You have to go through and do a whole restoration on it, and you have to do that digitally,” he added. “It’s a very, very expensive process to do it. So when we did the transfer to digital, we only transferred really the upgraded version."

“We’ve been working on them for quite a while,” Mr. Lucas said, “but still, there are pipelines. Unfortunately, the recent releases get priority over what we call the classic versions of things.
The phrasing by him speaks volumes.

Can't wait for this, will they be getting cinema rereleases too? I only ever saw Attack of the Clones and Revenge of the Sith at cinemas and I'd love to see the rest...

I think I will give upgrading these movies a miss. Do not want to have to buy episodes 1-3 and prefer to watch the orginal cuts of 4-6 anyway.

^ I think that the revised version of Empire Strikes Back really is superior in all regards. But that is a mute point since it won't be available seperately. At least...not yet.
