Review is up
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/White.../15357/#Review and Oh my god ![]() [Show spoiler] I can't believe a film 56 years old can look this good, there are brand new titles on blu that don't look this good. Truly an amazing restoration for White Christmas. A must buy for sure for the holidays. |

My jaw also dropped at seeing those screencaps. Truly magnificent, and the fact that most of the supplements are in HD makes this disc even sweeter. Kudos, Paramount! Now start bringing out more of your catalogue titles and give them the same care, please.

White Christmas is definitely not Paramount's best effort for the VistaVision process, but it is important as its very first release.
It is also, If I recall correctly, part of the studio's endeavor to restore its VistaVision library. Many, if not all, of those VistaVision films were also released as regular 35 mm flat prints world-wide. This means that with Blu-Ray's superior resolution we now have a chance to enjoy the original format as it should have be seen enjoyed when they were originally released to theaters. I am hoping that more of these releases will come out from Paramount and other studios, regardless of their intrinsic cinematic quality. |

for a Paramount release it looks like a pretty good job so I'm definitely pleased even though I don't really like this film THAT much.
I mean it's cool to see it get released on bd, but I personally much prefer Holiday Inn to this remake. Fred Astaire just blows away Danny Kaye any day, and the female leads and overall story are much better in the earlier film imo. But anyway, let's see, this makes a whopping total of 3 catalog films from before 1970 that they have released on blu-ray in 4 years. uhh not good enough Paramount. not by a long stretch. (pray True Grit looks as good) Last edited by Arkadin; 10-29-2010 at 02:47 PM. |

I am glad for all the White Christmas fans out there that Paramount seems to have done a great job with this blu title.
I hope next year Universal will hop on the bandwagon and do as good of a job on one of my favorites, Holiday Inn. |

I have a complaint. According to the the review page:
https://www.blu-ray.com/movies/White.../15357/#Review the original aspect ratio is 1.66:1, but the aspect ratio on the blu-ray release is 1.78:1. This means either the picture was stretched slightly, making the characters too tall and whatnot, or the tops and bottoms of the picture were cut off, or we are seeing parts of the picture not originally shown and probably not meant to be shown. Why can't they show it to us the way it was originally shown in theaters? while there are certain similarities, White Christmas is not a remake of Holiday in. That looks excellent!
Something doesn't look quite natural about those screens, but for a 1954 film I suppose some digital tweakage may be necessary. Vistavision has a 1.5:1 aspect ratio on the film, but apparently 1.85:1 was the preferred theatrical aspect ratio. So I don't think there's anything wrong with the framing here. Here's a brief blurb about it: http://www.widescreenmuseum.com/widescreen/wingvv1.htm Last edited by 42041; 10-29-2010 at 09:28 PM. |

maybe not a direct remake--I mean obviously they changed the plot some--but certainly it was based on the same idea. also--from wiki "White Christmas was intended to reunite Crosby and Fred Astaire for their third Irving Berlin showcase musical. Crosby and Astaire had previously co-starred in Holiday Inn (1942) (of which 'White Christmas' was a partial remake) |
