Seriously - How many people here would look to walmart of a good TV either?
heres the big point. most people aren't going to touch either with hooks. but the people who are wealthy enough to have an hdtv and be looking for an hd player, who also shop at walmart (there are quite a bit of them) see a bdp-s300 for 400 there and 500 at the mall or this venturer stuff for 150 bucks. if they are wealthy enough for an hdtv, then i think a little 250 dollar difference between a 1080i peice of junk and a sony blu-ray player is going to get minimilized really fast. remember we are dealing with upper middle class to upper class here, they don't buy off brand electronics!

Yeah, that is very likely. I guess the big unknown is whether or not wal-mart will be selling them and if they do, how they market them. Marketed correctly, they could do ok.

It would make perfect sense to sell this at Wal-Mart since it would fit right in with all ther other unknown brands they sell in electronics.
The thing is...blu-ray would have 1080p and wouldn't be this half assed player....so if a blu-ray player came out with these same specs, I would be laughing my ass off as well (like I am right now with this POS).

See BDA is smart. They don't put out shit as a desperation move.

I'm not going to say this is not news at all, as it is, but Amazon.com is selling the HD-A2 at $238, so I'm not dead sure of the huge effect it could have, seeing as how people may not understand what's different between it and an upconverting DVD player, as we know Wal-Mart will not educate them. Still, let's see how the BDA responds.

I wouldn't praise a $150 dollar Blu-Ray player because it would be a suck a$$ player and would more than likely have more problems than someone would want to deal with. And horribly made players aren't good for any format, DVD Blu-Ray or HD DVD.

I think the upper middle to upper class is accurate when considering who owns today. The more these prices fall though, the more we reach the middle and lower.

I think there are plenty of people that buy HDTV's from walmart. And they don't need to be wealthy. I don't think its out of the ordinary to think someone spending $700 on a TV at walmart might spend an extra $150 on a high def player.

The person who WOULD buy the blu-ray player, probably isn't buying it at walmart anyway (PS3 exluded..).

Umm.. obviously plenty of people. Otherwise I don't think Wal-mart would carry an electronics section.

i buy electronics from walmart all the time. i buy ipods, psps, nintendo ds, sony playstation 3s, oh wait my list doesn't have any of that sh1t brand stuff in it does it. seriously i have never seen anybody buy an hdtv at wal-mart where i live. the 30 dollar dvd players sell like hotcakes, but there is a big difference between a 30 dollar dvd player and a 150 dollar hd dud player.

Many, many people. I welcome this, and hope that BR follows up with their own inexpensive player. Price does matter in regards to the format reaching a board market. Besides, at $150 someone can get multiple players for different rooms.

Well, I think it would have been smart to make a 1080i blu-ray player if it could have been done at a much lower cost. There are a ton of people that only have 720P or 1080i and aren't likely to upgrade in the future. What they could have saved now could easily cover a replacement player in the future.

the question is how many people who shop at walmart have hdtvs. i bet its less than 10%. about 2% of the people there are wealthy enough to have already bought or be strongly considering a name brand one. so we a targeting roughly 8% of the market who has an hdtv, but not an hd player. now these people aren't poor and don't buy off brand electronics from wally world, so who is this even targeting????

The name 'Venturer' is very apt. Someone who buys this cheap thing probably has quite an adventure in store when it comes time to actually play the discs ... Still, at that price how can it fail to sell?

Oh and another thing......I bet this POS would only work for 6 months. HAH that means it would work longer than a 360

You'll be able to buy a Sony Blu-ray player for $250-$299 with a choice of titles like Ratatouille, Cars, Spiderman Trilogy, Simpsons, Die Hard 4.0 etc. by Christmas.

Now what are HDTV owning Mr and Mrs Average going to spend their Christmas budget on?

1 + 1 = 1

1 hd dvd combo disc + 1 venturer HD DVD player = 1 disaster!

The real ? is how many ppl who already have HDTVs will be sold on cheap hi-def players. The real cost of getting either hi-def format is not the player, it's the TV.
