I totally disagree. Technology is always progressing and there is no doubt that Polarization will eventually dominate just as its inevidible that some form of autostereo will eventually replace glasses all together. The only question is when. I expect that by 2015 active shutter will be considered out of date.

technology is always improving, but I have yet to see a flying car even though aome people where saying they are just around the corner 50 years ago. In the end the only thing that matters, and I think we agree, is can it be done cheapely enough so that shutters don't have an advantage. And that I am not sure about.

Since Polarized televisions are clearly possible its inevidible that once they are out and mass manufactored the price of them will go down. Once the price goes down to the point where the price difference between polarized and shutter is a matter of hundreds not thousands many will choose polarization for its obvious advantages.

Active Shutter glasses will go down in price also. I am also sure they will be designed to be less bulky. People are acting like they will stay the same size and price.

Active Shutter will go down but will always have inherit disadvantages. Its inevidible that as a new technolgy goes down in price it will eventually narrow the difference with the older one

no, you are missing the point. There arte two ways of making a polarized flat panel TV right now

realD (as mentioned in the article): add a second LCD
JVC+ (as mentioned in the article): double the resolution and add a special lens. (which is why they are 1920 x 510 and still extremely expensive)

You can't just assume the extra costs to do all that will magically disappear.

This is the issue, if improvements in LCD building lead to 1/2 the cost then that RealD type TV will still be a lot more expensive then the Shutter TV, especially as size of the TV grows.

That is why the RealD spokes person admitted they will both co-exist for the next 5 years. He is hoping that some time in the near future someone will come up with tech that is completely different and won't have that price differential that automatically comes with the two techs above.

That is why it is an if. If no one comes up with something that is completely different then you won't have cheap polarized 3D. It is not like BD players where the high cost was due to them trying to recuperate R&D and low production models. Nor like disks where replication costs are relatively insignificant and what you are paying for is content which is why you might pay 30$+ for one movie and 5$ for an other (or the same movie a few months later)

but it is not a matter of new vs old but different techs and material. No matter how long cars are around and they don't change much they will never be cheaper then a laptop. If for no other reason then a car needs all that metal and plastic, so it can't be built for under 500$. That is the issue here. With what is possible today polarized 3DTV needs a lot more things and so has a much higher cost. All the things a polarized TV needs will also be found in a Shutter-glasses TV. So any cost decrease will affect both and will probably affect the Shutter TV most (i.e. if the HDMI connector becomes 1/2 the cost since the Shutter TV is less the Shutter TV's price will decrease by a larger %)

I've been waiting for passive technology to finally reach projectors and when the price is more reasonable, that's when I will finally jump into the 3D market.

Well if passive is coming, that means I won't be buying for another 2 years for when passive starts to lower in price. Just got my sony bundle, other then the cheap lighter weight glasses.

I assume with passive, you won't have the ghosting effect you do with active shutter.

Thats coming fast. The price for the polarized TV's is still expensive. I have recently bought the 3D active shutter technology and its been great so far. The only problem, of course, is the cost of the glasses. When the TV's first come out in the US the price will be sky high. Once the price lowers then I might be interested.
