I got DD+ to work some what in analog 5.1....but its still down on output...with no way to turn it up via db adjustments...only down....so you can get better sound via analog...but still with lower than normal db output....and wait until you try adjusting your sub/s because in my case it can't be done even close to right....and when I turn on an sd dvd...I still like the soundfield better.....so this is still not a very good option as those who try one will soon find out.

Hurry up Blu Ray....and try and get the basics right please

Ok I just got my Toshiba HD DVD player today and I am having similar error codes with the HDMI, and mine is 175$ Moster cable one at that, so I know it's not the cable is the player. It takes forever for the player to turn on as GTP reported, and some older movies that I have can't be payed in Letterbox format, maybe I need to read the owners manual more than the quick glance that I gave it. I will give this player a chance to work out some of these kinks, because I have sometimes found with new technology it might need to run a few times before it starts working correctly (exmpl LG computer monitor I bought from tiger direct).

I will say this "The Last Samurai" looks absoultly AUWSOME on my Sony 55in 3LCD at 720P. I kid you not this TV rocks on HighDef Stuff, I can only imagine what 1080P would look like, but maybee in a few years. My advice to the average consumer would be to wait on this HD DVD player for a few months. I hope Blu-ray does not have these problems, but I will still give this HD DVD some more time before I give my final assesment!

Default BD pc drive for sure

I'll have a bluray pc recorder drive for sure, quite likely comming bundled with a new laptop
Next I'll try to get the PS3 if the price isn't something ridiculous, I really want it.
I also think I'll get a HD-DVD drive for my pc if toshiba doesn't give up the format completely soon, but I won't be spending more than 80-100 bucks on it so it'd be a while. I'd also be satisfied with a read-only device for that.

I just received confirmation from Pioneer that their player will be released in June. I for one am psyched! I was worried the reports of a delay till September were prove true. Not the case, the wait is almost over.

What is it about the Pioneer that makes it so special from Samsung, LG, or Panasonic?

Honestly, I'd wait until more than one BR player is out.

I can't remember the last time, if ever, that Samsung put out a good DVD player so I can't really see wanting a BR player from them, either.

If you've waited this long, at least wait until a few of the BR players are out and then make the best choice.

My money is easily on the Sony and the Pioneer Elite being the best choices.

I HOPE Samsung brings out their A game for their BR player because it needs to be good, especially at its price point and release date.

I have 2 samsung upconversion DVD players and the 1st on was really quirky in the upconversion(edit lol) setting and anyone who is a novice in the DVD world would have returned it...but I worked it out...

the 2nd one was alot better....but their remote control response is still lacking...

I am really starting to consider waiting a full generation to pass so I can get a smaller player....these things look to be the size of current high end receivers....they shouldn't be so gigantic...

I know what you mean, but frankly, if the product ends up being really good...I'll MAKE room for it.

I've heard the 1,800.00 price tag is "subject to change"...and I've seen the Samsung player price drop some...

has the retail price come down at all for the Pioneer Elite?

Not that I know of.

I'd love to see Samsung go to an MSRP of $799 to match the "higher end Toshiba." <- No, I didn't that write that quoted item with a straight face.

Someone on AVS said that the Elite models go down in price quickly after launch. Is this true? I have no real experience with this line of products.

That's news to me, although it would be nice.

http://www.pioneerelectronics.com/pn...062577,00.html

That's still the most current information.

Here's one thing people have to rememeber: What did the Pioneer Elite 59avi cost when it first came out? Damn near $2000 for an upconverting REGULAR DVD player/universal player.

Last year, what did the Pioneer Elite 79avi come out for?

My point is: A $1799 MSRP for a first gen/ cutting edge BLU RAY player under the Pioneer Elite flag? Relatively speaking, that's pretty damned good!

I'll get a Blu-Ray player, and a PC drive.

Oh, and can't forget the PS3, I'm really excited about that. I know some stuff about it that hasn't been publicly exposed as of yet, but I cannot tell you all, so as to not void my promises.

Anyways, I'm pretty much certain that Blu-Ray will end up winning out, because Universal is money-hungry, and is only supporting HD-DVD because they lost a ton of money on UMD and blame Sony for that poor investment.

MS has stated that Blu-Ray may end up being compatable with Windows Vista.

So, HD-DVD is looking less and less impressive by the day.
