I like that this thread has turned into "the ethics of Custom Taxes". That's great... I'm still returning it though.

What if the boxset is damaged after you pay the postage and custom charges? You'd still be out of pocket £25 if you had to send it back. Will play be charged their end by customs? I take it you don't have this problem with amazon when you order from them.

The terms and conditions are there regarding the risks of import taxes but I'd imagine play.com would go out of business tomorrow if it's UK customers had to go to the Post Office to collect and pay extra for their goods.

I don't get it. Play.com is located in the UK no? I order from the UK all the time and I never pay any customs fees.

So what? He's in the EU, so there shouldn't be any taxes.

Jersey isn't a part of EU, so basically everytime you order from Play, and other UK websites possibly, you have a risk of getting hit with extra fees! I imagine the price of that isn't as high in England, as it is in Denmark where everything is extraordinarily expensive. The Danish government is already taking a big chunk of peoples money so why should i, Willingly, give them more? The lady at the post office didnt seem mind, simply shipping it back.
If its morally or ethicly correct is a whole other discussion, that should be reserved for a seperate thread.

But i've bought other stuff from Play.com in the past, supported them if you will, so i think they can handle one item being returned.

play is Jersey based, Jersey isnt part of the UK, they dont have to pay tax the same as other UK based companys would have to. I have never had to pay import duty from any Jersey based shop either.

as for the customs fees they are not fines, its just Tax.
Even if you return the item to play.com the item has still been imported and is still liable, if it was damaged you could send it back and it would probably be listed as a replacement item and get through customs with no charges (or play might prepay it but i doubt that).

its just a case of buyer beware when importing things, is this the most expensive thing you have imported into Denmark ? id expect this to be a common occurance if you often import stuff.

This must be a Denmark thing though, as I've ordered (to Wales) things over 30 pounds (DVD's) as well as over a hundred (games consoles) and never been charged by the Post Office (fingers crossed) for import duties.

Jersey isn't part of the EU (as the OP mentioned) but has a special relationship with it and it does not have VAT added to their goods but in 2008 it added a goods and service tax to certain items.

Where do amazon ship from? Do we just have sorting warehouses here in the UK or are the good stored and sent from there?

9£... Yes, 9£ is the maximum amount of money you can import for in Denmark. If you have ordered anything over that, and it gets caught, then you have to pay around 10£ in Import Duties.

UPDATE: Amazon ships out both from Jersey and from their warehouses in England i think. The nice thing about Amazon is that they tell you where its being send from!

As far as I am aware items below £18 come from jersey but play do have a warehouse and office in the UK and goods over £18 as far as I know are suppose to be come from with the UK warehouse so we don't get hit with any other charges.

That's good to hear, I don't buy a lot of stuff on-line but I'd be gutted with an import charge and the hassle of going to my local sorting office (but it's something you have to learn to live with and factor into your budget while buying from the US when you go over £18 (which I think is too low lol)).

Yeah, you guys are so lucky! I think you should be happy you can buy for 18£, instead of petty 9£ like us in Denmark.

I buy alot over the internet from play and other companies.

Most compaines (tesco, thehut operated sites, play.com and HMV) I noticed seemed to have shipped from UK main land but also I had other packages that been over £18 that had stamped on it UK import and VAT prepaid so they do it for you if it comes from the jersey/guernsey.

What you see on the site is what you pay and no more.

On that note with Amazon I never seen a product over £18 with their jersey partner and don't know if they operate in the same way or if you get stung with any extra charges.

Playusa I have imported before and never again importing from the US over £18 the royal mail charges are more expensive then the actual customs charge.
