I learned that in general blu ray doesn't feel as 'special as it did last year or the year before that because everybody owns it now, which is a good thing, but i equate it to my favorite band releasing a hit record and therefore 'selling out'.

It's getting to the point where it feels 'uncool' to buy the discs.

Bring on 4k!

I've learn that no matter how many years past, people keep making the same mistakes they swore they would no longer made in the previous years "What Have You Learn INSERT YEAR" threads

1) The Fourth Kind blu-ray works great as a cure for insomnia

2) Having a capable director means nothing if your script is crap (Saw 3D)

3) Rather than spending $15 on see Avatar in IMAX 3D, I should've waited for the re-release of Dances with Wolves with 3D buffalo stampedes

4) Apparently Christopher Nolan can top The Dark Knight

5) Splice isn't nearly as awful as people say it is

6) Ripping off of the Terminator plot and replacing robots with angels does not make for a watchable movie (Legion)

7) Apparently Hollywoodland isn't going to be the only great thing Ben Affleck has done since Good Will Hunting

8) Regardless of how good it is, making an Edgar Wright movie without Simon Pegg does not make for box office success

9) Between Kick-As*, Daybreakers, Frozen, Inception, Predators, REC 2, Splice, The Crazies, Hot Tub Time Machine, Knight & Day, Scott Pilgrim VS The World, The Town, Buried, Let Me In, The Expendables, Red and the upcoming Black Swan and True Grit, 2010 was a great year for film

10) Audiences apparently decided to turn out for Vampires Suck but not Scott Pilgrim or Let Me In

I love movies and enjoy them for what they are, I never go in expecting to hate anything. Did You Hear About The Morgans was one of the first time I could tell that there was utterly no chemistry between horse lady and douche bag guy. I doubt they even spoke to eachother off camera

Aside from Scott Pilgrim, Inception and (somewhat) Iron Man 2, this was the first summer where I looked up the week-by-week movie releases and shrugged my shoulders at all but 3 Friday's for the entire summer

Though I appreciate James Cameron's technical achievements in the making of "Avatar," the story and characters were not very compelling. It is a beautiful film to behold but ultimately had negligible effect on the pop culture. That distinction still lies with George Lucas and the "Star Wars" franchise. The original film was released over 30 years ago and the kids (and some adults) are still playing with the toys and other licensed goods that are forever occupying retail space the world over. I am also glad I showed restraint and waited for the box set of "Avatar."

I learned that the "Star Wars" films will be released on Blu-ray next year. That will make it the fifth time I have purchased the original trilogy on a home video medium. Thankfully I have been smart enough to dispose of each previous incarnation while it was still worth something.

Chris Nolan has emerged as this generation's Steven Spielberg. I will see any film which bears his name as "Director." In the last few years, few films have motivated me to visit the cineplex for repeat viewings with each revealing something new. I cast my vote for "Inception" as the year's best film.

M. Night Shyamalan went from marquee status to Ed Wood status in a single decade. He is truly one of the worst directors working in film. How did the promising director of such films as "The Sixth Sense," "Unbreakable," "Signs," and "The Village" sink lower with each subsequent release? The films "Lady in the Water," "The Happening," and "The Last Airbender" are beyond awful. The studio had better drop the "From director, M. Night Shyamalan," headline from his next film project, otherwise, it'll be box office poison.

Leonardo DiCaprio has emerged as my favorite actor. My two favorite films this year were "Shutter Island," and "Inception." Leo handled both roles famously and I believe his best work still lies ahead. Very few of today's actors can claim similar achievements and Leo is still a young man.

A few of my favorite things: Martin Scorsese, Pixar, Disney, Criterion and Fox's release of "The Sound of Music."

Along with "The Sound of Music," Fox has done a stand out job this year with some great catalog titles. My most recent purchases include "Moulin Rouge," "Romeo + Juliet," "The Rocky Horror Picture Show," and my most cherished Blu-ray possession, "The Alien Anthology."

I have to admit that digi books have grown on me. I hated them with a passion initially but now I actually grab them while they are still available.

Walt Disney's classic animated films are timeless. Watching hand-drawn animation is like watching moving works of art. Computer generated images will never have the warmth and lushness of 2-D. I am extremely pleased that the classic tiles are being rolled out at a good pace.

I have devoted more viewing hours to television. For years there was little I could discuss at the water cooler because much of the reality, sitcom, and episodic television programs were pure crap. Though my beloved series, "Lost" is now part of history, I still eagerly await the exploits of Dexter Morgan, Don Draper and Sheriff Rick Grimes.

AMC's "The Walking Dead" is the best new television show of the year.

I buy way too many Blu-ray movies that will never be viewed or will never be viewed again. Films of marginal interest will now be viewed via movies on demand. They won't occupy valuable shelf space. The process of weaning has begun and the hardest films to part with were produced decades ago. What does that say about today's cinematic output?

Next year will likely see the release of ""The Color Purple," "Jaws," "Jurassic Park," "Lawrence of Arabia," "Raiders of the Lost Ark" and those other two Indiana Jones films. I expect E.T. The Extra-terrestrial will be released in 2012 to coincide with its 30th Anniversary.

I learned that 3D is as stupid as its ever been! A properly setup and calibrated surround system will add far more dimension and be more immersive than any 3D image will ever be.

I also learned that Home Theater projectors are amazing and all but eliminate the need to ever go to the cinema....IMO of course.

  • Buying Disney movies the first week they are released is the best time to purchase them as long as there are coupons, even ones I am only half interested in.
  • Just because it's a DEAL doesn't mean I NEED it.
  • I don't watch nearly enough things in my theater.
  • / 3D is still around.

what i learned in 2010:

1: how to remodel a basement and do home improvements in general.

this year i framed out my basement, ran/moved a bunch of electrical wiring, insulated the basement walls and ceiling, build an in-wall movie cabinet, and am currently working on drywalling. i also installed a new stove and microwave and ran new wiring for those as well. this summer i also put in my 1st tile flooring.

2: as far as blu's go, my price point for movies is $20 for new releases, u can always find a new release somewhere for around $20.

3: amazon prime is a God-send. i saved so much money b/c of them and still had my movies on release day. renewed my membership a couple weeks ago for the coming year.

4: summer 2011 is going to be awesome for new movies.....for me anyway. lots of great movies coming out that i'm really pumped to see in the theater.’

5: 3D movies give me a headache.

I learned that 3D is not meant for home use. That is, until they make Glasses-less 3D TV's for the public. Then I will consider the purchase.
